Chapter 8 - A New Light

By the time Noah turned nine, the changes in his life were profound. Thanks to an innovative physical therapy program funded by Claire’s thriving career—and Daniel’s court-ordered payments, which were aggressively garnished from his meager paychecks—Noah no longer wore a leg brace. He could run, albeit with a slight limp, but it never stopped him from keeping up with other kids.
One Saturday afternoon, Thomas took Claire, Noah, and Mia to a park.
Claire sat on a park bench, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching Noah and Mia chase a golden retriever across the grass. Thomas sat down next to her, sliding his arm comfortingly around her shoulders.
"He’s really thriving, Claire," Thomas said softly, watching Noah laugh as he threw a tennis ball. "You did that. You saved him."
"We saved each other," Claire corrected, leaning her head against Thomas’s shoulder. For years, she had associated men with deceit and abandonment. But Thomas had spent the last year proving to her every single day that honor, loyalty, and true love still existed.
Suddenly, Noah ran up to the bench, his face flushed with excitement. "Thomas! Look! I... I caught the ball before Mia did!"
Thomas grinned, reaching out to ruffle Noah's hair. "I saw that, buddy! You're getting too fast for us."
Noah looked at Thomas, his eyes bright and full of trust. "Can we... can we get ice cream after this, Dad?"
May you like
The park seemed to go completely still. Noah had never called Thomas "Dad" before. Claire’s breath caught in her throat. Thomas looked at Claire, his eyes shining with emotion, before looking back down at the little boy.
"You bet we can, son," Thomas replied, his voice thick with warmth. "Any flavor you want."
