Chapter 4 - The Waking Ghost

On the fifth night, the mechanical hiss of the ventilator stopped.

Claire held her breath as Dr. Marsh and a team of respiratory therapists extubated Noah. For several agonizing seconds, the little boy didn't move. Then, his chest expanded, and he let out a weak, raspy cough.

"Noah," Claire whispered, leaning over the guardrails, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Noah, mommy's here. I'm right here, baby."

Noah's eyelids fluttered, opening slowly. But the bright, mischievous spark that usually defined her son was gone. His eyes were unfocused, drifting aimlessly around the room before settling near Claire. He didn't smile. He didn't speak.

"Mom... my..." he mumbled, his voice incredibly faint. He tried to lift his right hand, but it trembled violently before falling back onto the mattress.

"He's demonstrating motor deficits on his right side," Dr. Marsh explained softly, checking Noah's pupillary response. "The prolonged seizure and temporary hypoxia have caused localized neurological trauma. We are looking at a long road of physical, occupational, and speech therapy."

"But he'll recover? Fully?" Claire pleaded, her eyes begging for a miracle.

"Children's brains possess incredible plasticity, Claire. But I cannot guarantee a hundred percent recovery. It will take time, resources, and an immense amount of effort."

Claire kissed Noah's warm forehead, tears finally breaking through her stoic facade. "We'll do it. Whatever it takes."

The next morning, the divorce papers were served to Daniel at his workplace. Claire wasn't just asking for a dissolution of marriage; she was asking to strip him of everything—his assets, his savings, and any right to ever speak to Noah again.
