Chapter 7 - The Slow Ascent

The next two years were a testament to human resilience. Claire threw herself entirely into Noah’s rehabilitation. She sold the large marital home, filled with bitter memories, and moved into a sunlit, single-story house closer to a specialized pediatric clinic.

Every morning started the same way. Claire would help Noah stretch his stiff right leg.

"You can do it, sweetie. Just three more steps to the kitchen," Claire cheered, holding out her hands.

Noah, now eight years old, gritted his teeth. His right leg dragged slightly, but he pushed forward, his balance steadier than it had been a year ago. "Look... Mommy... no... hands," he said, his speech slow but perfectly clear. He broke into a wide, triumphant grin, throwing his arms around her waist.

Claire held him tight, blinking back tears of pure joy. "I see you, my brave boy. You're doing so amazing."

To support them, Claire went back to her roots as a graphic designer, launching a freelance business from home. Within a year, her designs caught the attention of a major marketing firm in Scottsdale. The owner of the firm was a man named Thomas Sterling.

Thomas was a widower who raised a nine-year-old daughter named Mia. When he first met Claire to discuss her contract, he didn't see a broken single mother; he saw a fiercely intelligent, strong, and breathtakingly beautiful woman.

Their professional relationship quickly blossomed into deep mutual respect, and slowly, gently, into something more. Thomas understood grief, and he understood the sacred duty of protecting a child.
