Chapter 6 - Crossing the Atlantic

The first-class cabin of the flight to Paris was quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of reading lights. Evelyn reclined in her seat, sipping a glass of champagne as the aircraft glided over the Atlantic Ocean.
For four long years, she had felt small. She had allowed Grant’s mother to belittle her intelligence, Grant’s sister to exploit her generosity, and Grant himself to treat her as an replaceable backdrop to his ego. She had swallowed her pride to preserve a marriage that was built on illusion.
Now, thousands of feet above the sea, she felt completely free.
Her phone chimed as the Wi-Fi reconnected. A document popped up from Julian Vance: DIVORCE DECREE FINALIZED.
She had secured full retention of her property, her grand-mother's inheritance, and a substantial financial settlement awarded from Grant’s liquid assets to cover embezzled funds restitution. Grant was facing two years of probationary oversight and complete bankruptcy.
Evelyn smiled, swiping the notification away. She opened her new work schedule.
Her new office was located in the 8th Arrondissement of Paris, overlooking the Seine. She would be leading the European expansion for Apex Global, managing high-stakes corporate integration across France, Germany, and Italy.

She turned her gaze out the window into the dark horizon. The sun was beginning to rise, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
Her old life was gone. Her true life was just beginning.
