Chapter 5 - Eviction and Reckoning

Over the next three weeks, the world Grant, Marian, and Paige had built on Evelyn’s back collapsed like a house of cards.

With Mercer & Associates dropped by Apex Global, the firm crumbled under the weight of lawsuits and financial reviews. Arthur Pendelton ousted Grant from the company, suing him for recovery of the embezzled $400,000. Grant’s personal bank accounts were frozen as part of the divorce proceedings, leaving him unable to pay for high-end lawyers, let alone Vanessa’s private care.

Meanwhile, at the Lincoln Park townhouse, reality hit Marian and Paige with brutal force.

Without Evelyn’s income to pay the utilities, property taxes, and grocery bills, the household devolved into chaos. Marian, who had spent years boasting about her family's social standing, found herself served with a civil judgment forcing her to return thousands of dollars in high-end jewelry Evelyn had permitted her to wear over the years. Paige was forced to sell her car to cover the court judgment for her unpaid loan.

Vanessa, realizing that Grant was no longer wealthy and was facing potential federal charges, miraculously recovered enough mobility to pack her bags and leave in an Uber, abandoning Grant entirely.

On the final day of the thirty-day eviction notice, Evelyn returned to the townhouse accompanied by her attorney and the local sheriff.

Grant sat on the front steps in a wrinkled suit, surrounded by cardboard boxes. Marian was crying on the porch, while Paige sat quietly in her car, completely broken.

Grant looked up as Evelyn stepped out of her town car. He looked older, haggard, and defeated.

"Evelyn," he said, his voice raspy. "Vanessa left. My mother is ruined. I have nothing left."

Evelyn stood before him, her coat buttoned neatly, looking glowing and radiant.

"You had a faithful wife who loved you, Grant," she said softly. "You had a home, a career, and respect. But you sacrificed it all for vanity, cruelty, and greed."

"Can we just talk? One more chance... please," he begged, tears welling in his eyes.

"The movers are here to change the locks," Evelyn replied, walking past him without a second glance. "My flight to Paris leaves tonight."
