Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Grant Mercer

The morning light broke cold over Chicago. Inside the Lincoln Park townhouse, Grant Mercer woke up with a pounding headache on the sofa in the primary bedroom. Vanessa lay in the king-sized bed, complaining about the discomfort of the mattress and demanding higher-end catered meals. In the kitchen, Marian was complaining to Paige about Evelyn’s "disrespectful attitude," convinced that Evelyn would come crawling back by noon with an apology.

At precisely 8:15 AM, the doorbell rang.

Marian adjusted her cardigan and walked to the door, expecting to find Evelyn standing on the porch, crushed by guilt. Instead, she was met by a uniform process server flanked by two legal aides.

"Grant Mercer?" the process server announced.

Grant walked into the hallway, rubbing his eyes. "Yes? What is this?"

"You have been formally served with divorce papers, a motion for an immediate asset freeze, and a thirty-day legal notice of eviction for all occupants not listed on the property deed."

Marian gasped, clutching her chest. "Eviction?! This is her husband’s house!"

"The deed is registered exclusively under the name of Evelyn Hart," the process server stated neutrally, handing over a thick blue packet. "You have thirty days to vacate the premises. Furthermore, Paige Mercer is served with a summons regarding unpaid debt recovery."

Paige, who was pouring coffee in the kitchen, dropped her mug. It shattered across the hardwood floor.

"She’s bluffing!" Grant barked, his face red with humiliation. "Evelyn doesn't have the guts! She’s an HR clerk! She can’t afford lawyers like this!"

He snatched his phone off the console table and dialed Evelyn’s phone. It went straight to voicemail: “You have reached the office of Evelyn Hart, Regional Director of Global Audits. Please leave a message or contact corporate legal.”

Grant froze. Regional Director?

Before he could process the title, his business phone rang. It was Arthur Pendelton, the managing partner of Mercer & Associates and his primary investor.

"Grant, where the hell are you?" Arthur yelled through the receiver.

"Arthur, I'm just getting ready—"

"Get your ass to the corporate center right now! Apex Global just sent down their executive audit team. Their new Regional Director is terminating our master lease agreement pending a financial fraud investigation!"

"What?" Grant’s voice cracked. "Who is the Regional Director?"

"Evelyn Hart," Arthur roared. "Your damn wife!"
