Chapter 7 - The Trial of Mark Vance

The trial began six months later in a packed federal courtroom.
Mark sat at the defense table, stripped of his expensive suits, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit. The vanity and arrogance that had defined him were crumbling, replaced by a desperate, trapped scowl.
The prosecution built an airtight case. Toxicologists took the stand, detailing the lethal danger of the drugs found in Sophie's system. Detective Miller presented the physical evidence, including the dropper vials and the kitchen timer. Clara took the stand and bravely recounted her past horrors, exposing Mark's long-standing pattern of predatory manipulation.
Then, it was my turn to testify.
I walked up to the witness stand, took the oath, and looked directly at the jury. I told them everything. I described the subtle signs I had ignored, the mounting terror, the night I found the wet towel, and finally, the horrific scene through the half-open bathroom door.

"Mark Vance was not a father," I declared, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet courtroom. "He was a predator hiding behind a wedding ring and a smile. He took my daughter's innocence and safety for his own dark ends, but he failed to destroy her."
Mark tried to interrupt, jumping out of his seat and shouting, "She's lying! She's crazy!" but the court bailiffs immediately restrained him and slammed him back into his chair.
