Chapter 4 - The Legal Battle Begins

The legal battle commenced with a ferocious custody and bail hearing. Mark’s wealthy family hired a high-powered defense attorney, Richard Sterling, known for getting dangerous men off on technicalities.
In court, Sterling attempted to twist the narrative entirely. He portrayed Mark as a dedicated, loving father who was merely using harmless, alternative holistic therapies to treat a child suffering from alleged "severe behavioral issues." He went so far as to accuse me of child neglect and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, claiming I fabricated the entire event out of mental instability.
"Your Honor," Sterling argued pompously before the judge, "my client is a respected corporate consultant with no criminal record in this state. The allegations are based on the hysterical claims of a mother undergoing a mental health crisis."
I sat at the prosecution table, holding my head high. Beside me was District Attorney Sarah Jenkins, a brilliant prosecutor who had no intention of letting Mark walk free.
"Your Honor," Sarah countered, stepping forward with unwavering authority. "The prosecution presents the certified forensic toxicology reports from the state crime laboratory. The level of synthetic depressants found in the child’s system was near-lethal. Furthermore, we have secured a search warrant for Mr. Vance's encrypted cloud drives."
The judge looked over the initial lab findings, her expression hardening with every line she read.

"Bail is denied," the judge ruled firmly, slamming her gavel down. "The defendant will remain in custody pending trial. A permanent, full-restraining order is granted for the mother and child."
Mark looked over at me as he was led out in chains. For the first time, I didn't look down. I looked him dead in the eye, letting him see that the scared woman he thought he controlled was gone forever.
