Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

With Mark behind bars awaiting trial, I focused all my energy on Sophie's healing. We moved out of that horrific house and into a cozy, light-filled cottage near the coast, far away from the dark memories of the bathroom.
I enrolled Sophie in specialized pediatric trauma therapy with Dr. Evelyn Reed, a warm, patient specialist who used art and play therapy to help children process trauma.
In our third month at the cottage, I received an unexpected phone call from a woman named Clara.
"Ellen?" her voice trembled over the phone line. "You don't know me... but I saw the news articles about Mark's arrest. I was married to him ten years ago in Oregon."
My breath hitched. "Clara..."

"He did the same thing to my nephew when we lived together," Clara confessed, her voice thick with tears. "He tried to manipulate our lives, drugging the boy under the guise of treating his sleep apnea. Back then, I was too terrified to go to the police, and Mark managed to cover his tracks and flee before I could gather proof. When I saw what you did—how you stopped him—I knew I had to reach out. I want to testify."
Clara’s willingness to stand as a character witness was the missing piece of the puzzle. It proved a systematic pattern of behavior, destroying Mark’s defense that this was an isolated "misunderstanding."
