Chapter 5 - CONFRONTATION IN THE SKY

When the private elevator doors opened directly into our penthouse living room, my family looked like remnants of a hurricane.
My mother had not slept; her hair was uncharacteristically messy, her eyes red and swollen. My father looked ten years older, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hands shaking at his sides. Chloe was still wearing her casual clothes from the night before, her face ruined by dried mascara trails.
They stepped out onto the polished Italian marble floor, taking in the breath-taking views, the original Picasso paintings on the walls, and the sheer, staggering luxury of the residence.
Then their eyes landed on me.
I was sitting gracefully on a white leather sofa, holding a warm mug, surrounded by high-ceiling luxury that exceeded anything my parents had ever dreamed of owning. Alexander stood behind me, his hand resting securely on my shoulder like a guardian titan.
"Eleanor!" My mother rushed forward, but two tall, imposing security guards immediately stepped into her path, blocking her with stern expressions.
"Eleanor, please!" Irina wept, collapsing to her knees right there on the floor. "Tell your security to let us through! We are your family!"
"Family?" I repeated the word slowly, letting it hang in the air like a cold mist. "Is that what we were last night, Mother? When you looked me up and down like I was dirt? When you told me I looked like a server and demanded I keep my daughter hidden from the high-class guests?"
Irina’s face flamed with shame. "I... I was stressed! You know how important Chloe's day was! I didn't mean it, darling, you know I love you!"
"You have never loved me, Irina," I said, my voice quiet, flat, and absolute. "You loved having a black sheep. You needed me to be poor and miserable so Chloe could look like a princess."
"Eleanor, listen to me!" My father stepped forward, his voice cracking with a desperate combination of pride and panic. "I am your father! You cannot do this to us! My business... everything I built over thirty years... it's gone! The bank called in the debt this morning! They're taking the house! They're taking everything!"
"You pushed me, Dad," I said, staring straight into his desperate eyes. "You put your hands on me and pushed me and your four-year-old granddaughter into a freezing fountain. And then you stood there and laughed with Mark."
Richard swallowed hard, his face turning pale. "I was angry! The dress was ruined! Mark's family was watching!"
"And now Mark's family is ruined," Alexander chimed in, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "Mark Bennett's father was removed as CEO thirty minutes ago. Mark’s trust fund has been frozen, and his family has initiated legal annulment proceedings to sever all ties with your daughter, Chloe."
Chloe let out a blood-curdling shriek. "No! No! Mark loves me! He wouldn't do that!"
"Mark loved your family's supposed wealth and connections," Alexander said coldly. "Once he realized your family was bankrupt and that you had insulted the wife of the man who controls his father's company, he threw you away like yesterday's trash. Exactly as your family did to Eleanor."

Chloe collapsed against her father, sobbing hysterically. "Ellie! Please! Fix this! Tell your husband to stop! It's my wedding week! I'm supposed to be happy!"
"You built your happiness on my suffering for four years, Chloe," I said, standing up from the sofa. The heavy silence fell over the room as I walked slowly toward them, stopping just behind my security guards. "You all thought I was broken. You thought because I didn't scream, didn't fight back, and didn't beg for your money, that I was weak. But I wasn't weak. I was just saving my strength for the people who actually loved me."
