Chapter 3 - THE WARMTH IN THE STORM

The rear doors of the black Rolls-Royce closed with a heavy, vacuum-sealed thud, instantly cutting off the murmurs and shouts beginning to break out in the garden behind us. The interior was warm, scented with expensive leather and sandalwood.
The moment the car pulled away, Alexander tapped a button on the armrest. "Marcus, turn the heat to max and get us home immediately. Tell Dr. Evans to meet us at the penthouse."
"Right away, Mr. Vance," the driver replied, pulling out onto the highway.
Alexander immediately pulled a soft cashmere blanket from the compartment and wrapped it around Lily and me. He took off my wet high heels with gentle hands, inspecting the bloody scrape on my shin with a dark, brooding expression.
"I'm sorry," he muttered, his voice thick with raw emotion. He brought my cold hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles repeatedly. "I was two minutes late. If I had walked in two minutes earlier, he never would have touched you."
"Alexander, stop," I said, my voice trembling, not from cold, but from the sudden release of five years of emotional suppression. "You came. You were there. They looked at me like I was garbage... like I was nothing. And you..."
"You are my whole world, Eleanor," he said, looking straight into my eyes with unyielding fierce devotion. "They treated you like a disgrace because they are blind, bitter fools. But tomorrow, they will realize that the woman they discarded was the only thing standing between them and absolute ruin."
Lily whimpered softly in my lap, rubbing her eyes. Alexander leaned down, kissing her little cheek gently. "How is my little princess?"
"Daddy..." Lily whispered, holding up her small paper napkin, which was now soaked with water and faded ink. "My flowers got washed away."
Alexander’s expression softened, a heartbreakingly tender smile touching his lips. "We’ll draw new ones, sweetheart. A million new flowers. On real canvas. In a house where nobody will ever make you cry again."
Four years ago, when I was completely abandoned by my family after getting pregnant, I thought my life was over. They had declared me a disgrace, claiming I was ruined by an unnamed man who had left me. They didn't care to know the truth: that I had been rescued from an abusive ex-relationship by a man who loved me quietly, secretly, waiting for me to heal before asking for my hand in marriage.
Alexander and I had married in a private ceremony on a cliffside in Maine six months ago. We had planned to announce our marriage to the world at the end of this month, after Alexander finalized his company's public restructuring. I had wanted to give my family one last chance—one opportunity to treat me like a human being at Chloe's wedding before revealing that I was no longer the broke, helpless daughter they loved to step on.
They had failed the test horrifyingly.
When we arrived at the penthouse, Dr. Evans was already waiting. He cleaned and bandaged the scrape on my leg while a nanny helped put Lily into a warm bath and tucked her into her soft, king-sized bed.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of our bedroom, looking out at the sprawling city skyline, wrapped in a plush robe. Alexander walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"What are you thinking, Ellie?" he asked softly.
"I'm thinking about how much power they thought they had over me," I replied quietly. "For years, my mother's words felt like knives. My father's disappointment felt like a mountain on my chest. Tonight... when he pushed me... I realized they never loved me. They only loved the control they had over my misery."

"Then let me break that control completely," Alexander said, his voice turning to steel. "Tomorrow, I destroy them."
I turned in his arms, looking at the man who had given me a life I never thought I deserved. "Don't just destroy them, Alexander. Make them understand."
