Chapter 10 - THE EVER AFTER
That evening, Alexander, Lily, and I walked hand-in-hand along the private beach near our oceanfront home in Maine—the same spot where Alexander and I had exchanged our vows two years prior.
The gentle waves crashed softly against the shoreline, leaving cool white foam over the sand. Lily was running ahead of us, chasing seagulls with endless energy, her golden-brown curls bouncing in the ocean breeze. She was healthy, happy, and entirely untouched by the toxicity of the world we had left behind.
Alexander stopped walking, pulling me close into his side. He wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my hair, breathing in the scent of the salt air and rose oil.
"What are you thinking, my love?" he asked softly, his voice full of the same tenderness that had saved my life years ago.
"I'm thinking about that night at the fountain," I murmured, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. "I remember sitting in that ice-cold water, surrounded by people laughing at me... and I thought my life was over."
Alexander squeezed me tighter, his fingers intertwining with mine, the twin platinum bands on our fingers catching the golden light of the setting sun.
"And now?" he asked softly.
I looked out at our daughter, who had just stopped to collect a beautiful, smooth shell from the wet sand, turning around to show it to us with a radiant, pure smile that illuminated the entire beach.
"And now I realize it wasn't the end of my life at all," I said, a deep, unbreakable peace settling into my soul. "It was just the moment the water washed away everything that didn't belong in my future."
Alexander leaned down, pressing his lips to mine in a long, warm, sweet kiss that tasted of ocean salt and absolute devotion.
"To our future," Alexander whispered against my lips.
