Chapter 4 - THE MORNING AFTER

At precisely 6:00 AM the next morning, my phone began to ring.
It didn't just ring; it exploded. Notifications flooded the screen in a frantic, non-stop cascade. Missed calls from my mother. Fifty-two missed calls from my father. Dozens of frantic text messages from Chloe, ranging from furious insults to desperate begging.
Irina (Mother): Eleanor, answer your phone right now! What is the meaning of this? Your father's accounts are frozen! Chloe: Ellie please! Mark's father just canceled the wedding reception payment! They are threatening to annul the marriage! Talk to your husband! Richard (Father): Eleanor! Pick up! You are my daughter! You can't let him do this to our family!
I sat at the marble kitchen island, sipping hot green tea, wearing a silk robe. Alexander sat across from me in a tailored charcoal suit, calmly scrolling through a tablet while his head of legal affairs, Gabriel, stood nearby with a thick stack of manila folders.
"The Bennett family firm, Bennett Capital, has lost forty percent of its market valuation in the presale trading hour alone," Gabriel reported concisely. "Word spread through the elite circles last night about what occurred at the reception. The board of directors is holding an emergency meeting at nine. They are preparing to strip Mark Bennett's father of his CEO title to appease Vance Global."
"And Hayes Logistics?" Alexander asked, taking a sip of black coffee.
"Terminated," Gabriel replied with a cold professional smile. "The bridge loan was officially recalled at 7:00 AM. Their suppliers have halted all shipments. Bank accounts have been encumbered. By noon, Richard Hayes will be facing personal bankruptcy."
I looked down at my cup, feeling a strange mix of sadness and ultimate clarity. "They thought I was the dirt under their shoes. Now they're realizing they built their whole empire on a foundation that I was holding up."
"You were always too merciful with them, Eleanor," Alexander said gently, reaching across the marble to hold my hand. "When your father took out those loans, he used your mother's ancestral home as collateral. Did you know that?"
I blinked in surprise. "The estate in the countryside? The one my grandmother left?"
"Yes," Alexander said smoothly. "And as of twenty minutes ago, Vance Global acquired that debt from the bank. You now own your family's estate, Ellie. Entirely."
Before I could process this, the intercom chimed. The security desk downstairs sounded flustered.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance... I apologize for the intrusion," the guard's voice cracked over the speaker. "There is a group of people in the lobby demanding to see Mrs. Vance. They claim to be her parents and sister. They are... extremely frantic, sir. Should I call the police?"
Alexander looked at me, leaving the choice entirely in my hands. He didn't force my action; he gave me my voice back.

I smiled, a cold, calm feeling washing over me.
"No, security," I said into the intercom. "Send them up to the top floor penthouse. It's time we had a proper family reunion."
