Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Jasper and Kyle rushed out of the den, their faces flushed with righteous fury. "Get out of our house right now!" Kyle shouted, charging forward with his fists clenched—the exact same aggressive posture he had used earlier that day when holding down an eight-year-old boy.

The second operative didn't even flinch. With blinding speed, he stepped inside Kyle's reach, swept his legs out from under him, and slammed him face-first onto the marble floor with a bone-rattling crash. Kyle groaned, the wind knocked completely out of his lungs as a heavy combat boot pressed firmly between his shoulder blades.

"Kyle!" Jasper yelled, stopping dead in his tracks. He looked at the operative towering over his brother, then up at the lead operative by the door. Fear—raw, primal, and unfamiliar—flashed in Jasper's eyes. "Who sent you? Is this about the zoning permits? Name your price! We can pay whatever you want!"

The lead operative pressed a button on a small remote console in his hand. Instantly, the wall-mounted entertainment system in the den flickered back to life, bypassing the house's local grid.

Instead of cable television, the screen displayed a live, high-definition video feed from Saint Luke Medical Center.

The camera showed Toby lying quietly in his hospital bed, his small face bruised and swollen, an IV line taped securely to the back of his hand. Beside him sat me, my silhouette cast against the hospital wall, staring straight into the security lens with a gaze colder than deep space.

Arthur Sterling stared at the screen, his color draining rapidly from his face. "Alexander..." he whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in decades. "That's... that's just the boy. Kids get into fights. It was a playground accident—"

"A playground accident?" I spoke through the encrypted audio channel connected directly to the operatives' comms, my voice booming through the hidden speakers in the mansion. "Three grown men held an eight-year-old child down in the gravel, Arthur. You laughed while your son Jasper pinned his arms and your son Kyle pinned his legs. And then you slammed his head into the pavement."

"Alexander! Please!" Isabelle cried out, bursting into the foyer from the sunroom, her face pale and tear-stained. She looked at the tactical operatives, then at her father and brothers. "You have to stop this! This is insane! Call them off!"

I watched her through the camera feed, my expression unchanging.

"Isabelle," I said softly, the audio carrying into the room. "You sat in this house while our son was bleeding in a hospital emergency room. You chose your father's money over your own flesh and blood. You are just as complicit as they are."

May you like

"I was scared!" she sobbed, collapsing against the grand staircase railing. "Dad said—"

"Your father's reign is over," I interrupted coldly. "And yours with it."
