Chapter 2 - The Shadow Network Awakens

Within forty-five minutes of my call, the invisible machinery of a multi-billion-dollar private intelligence network swung into motion. Arthur Sterling believed he was untouchable. He was the patriarch of Sterling Industries, a sprawling real estate and construction conglomerate that dominated the Birchwood county lines. For decades, Arthur had bought local politicians, silenced regulatory inspectors, and terrorized anyone who dared cross him.

He thought beating an eight-year-old child was just another family disciplinary matter that local law enforcement could be paid off to ignore.

He didn't know that my old network operated completely outside local jurisdiction.

Viper established a temporary command post inside a secure mobile unit parked three blocks away from Saint Luke Medical Center. Satellite feeds illuminated bank accounts, phone logs, property deeds, and corporate shell entities tied to the Sterling family.

"Boss, we have eyes on the Birchwood estate," Viper reported through my encrypted earpiece while I sat beside Toby's hospital bed, stroking my son's hair. "Arthur is currently in his study pouring a scotch. Jasper and Kyle are in the den watching television, laughing about a local zoning bribe that went through this afternoon. They have no idea what's coming."

"And Isabelle?" I asked quietly, keeping my eyes fixed on Toby's pale face.

"She's sitting in the sunroom, Alexander," Viper said, his tone softening with professional pity. "She's on her phone with her father's lawyer, discussing how to spin the narrative if you cause trouble. She hasn't asked about Toby once since you dropped her off at the hospital entrance hours ago."

A cold, heavy numbness settled into my chest. Isabelle had changed over the last three years. She had grown accustomed to her father's toxic wealth, slowly transforming from the woman I loved into a cold extension of the Sterling dynasty. By abandoning our son at his grandfather's house while her family tortured him, she had crossed a line from which there was no return.

"Lock down their communication lines," I ordered softly. "Jam all cellular towers within a two-mile radius of the Birchwood estate. Cut off their internet, freeze their credit cards, and disable every vehicle in their garage remotely."

"Done," Viper replied with cold efficiency. "The Sterling cage is officially locked."
