Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

The afternoon sun cast a golden haze across the coastal town, turning the edges of the distant ocean waves into shimmering ribbons of light.
I sat on the wooden swing on the front porch, gently rocking back and forth as the soft ocean breeze rustled through the oak leaves overhead. In the distance, I could hear the faint, cheerful shouts of children playing soccer at the neighborhood park, punctuated by the unmistakable sound of my son's joyful voice calling out for a pass.
Life had returned to its natural, beautiful rhythm.
The shadows of my past life had served their purpose—they had risen from the dark to shield my family from destruction, and now, true to my word, they were buried once more beneath classified archives and locked vaults. I was no longer an operative, a commander, or a ghost.
I was simply Toby's dad.
The front gate clicked open, and Toby came running up the steps, his face glowing with sweat and happiness, clutching a shiny blue participation ribbon in his hand.
"Dad! We won! I scored the winning goal!" he shouted, panting as he climbed up onto the porch and leaned against my knee.
I pulled him close, wrapping both arms around him in a warm, protective embrace, breathing in the scent of sunshine and grass.
"I knew you would," I whispered, resting my chin on top of his head. "I'm so proud of you, buddy."
Toby leaned back, looking up at me with absolute trust and adoration in his bright eyes.
"We're really happy here, aren't we, Dad?"
I smiled, looking out past the porch toward the endless blue horizon where the sun was beginning its slow, peaceful descent.

"Yeah, buddy," I said softly, tightening my grip around his hand. "We really are. And nothing is ever going to change that."
We sat together on the porch as the evening stars began to twinkle one by one across the quiet sky—safe, together, and finally, completely at peace.
