Chapter 8 - The Verdict and Closing the Chapter

The trial itself was swift. With the airtight video evidence, expert medical testimony from Dr. Evans detailing how close Lily had come to losing her life, and character statements outlining Claire’s calculated actions, the jury deliberated for less than two hours.

“We find the defendant, Claire Vance, guilty on all counts of attempted murder in the second degree and child endangerment,” the jury foreman announced.

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

“Claire Vance, I sentence you to fifteen years in a state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first ten years.”

There were no gasps in the courtroom, only a heavy, solemn acceptance. Claire was led away, her chapter in our lives officially and legally closed behind iron bars.

When Mark and I arrived home, the sun was setting, painting the sky in gorgeous shades of gold and violet.

Lily was sitting on the back patio, drawing pictures with chalk on the pavement. She looked up as we walked through the gate, her bright purple crown perched proudly on her head.

“Mommy! Daddy! Look what I drew!” she called out, running over to show us a picture of three stick figures holding hands under a bright rainbow sun.

“It’s beautiful, baby,” I choked out, tears of joy stinging my eyes as I scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her neck.

Mark stepped in, wrapping his arms around both of us, completing our tight, unbreakable circle.

The past was behind us. The danger had passed. We had walked through the darkest fire imaginable, but our family had come out on the other side stronger, safer, and more deeply in love than ever before.
