Chapter 10 - The Bright Horizon (The Happy Ending)

Five years later, the sun shone just as brightly on Lily’s eleventh birthday as it had on that fateful day, but the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.

Our new backyard was filled with laughter, the sweet scent of barbecue, and twenty of Lily’s best school friends running around playing games. There was no tension, no watchfulness, and no fear.

Lily had grown into a brilliant, kind, and athletic young girl. She was the captain of her school’s track team and an straight-A student, completely untouched by the darkness that had once tried to claim her future.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the lawn, Mark walked out carrying a magnificent, triple-layer chocolate birthday cake adorned with glowing candles and a sparkling, elegant silver star instead of a unicorn.

The children gathered around the long wooden table, clapping and smiling.

“Make a wish, sweetie,” Mark said softly, leaning down next to her.

Lily closed her eyes tightly, her face glowing in the warm candlelight, and blew out every single candle in one massive breath.

A cheer erupted across the yard. Paper confetti floated through the evening air, and music played softly from the patio speakers.

I stood beside Mark, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me close against his side. He pressed a gentle kiss to my temple.

“Happy birthday to our girl,” Mark whispered.

“Happy birthday,” I smiled, looking out at the sea of happy children, knowing deep in my soul that our family’s story was now entirely our own—safe, bright, and filled with endless tomorrows.
