Chapter 7 - The Trial Prep and the Shadow of the Past

As the weeks rolled into summer, life settled into a new, cautious routine. Lily went back to school, her bright laughter echoing through the hallways once more, though Mark and I made sure she never ate or drank anything unless it came directly from our hands.
The preliminary court date arrived in late June.
Mark and I sat on the hard wooden benches of the county courthouse. Across the aisle, sitting behind a public defender with an exhausted expression, was Claire. She looked different in her standard orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back without makeup, stripped of the polished, arrogant facade she had worn for years.
When she caught my eye, she didn't look away. For a brief second, there was a flicker of panic in her eyes, followed quickly by that familiar, cold resentment.
The judge reviewed the digital evidence—the crystal-clear security footage showing Claire slipping the sedative into the unicorn cup, her careful placement of the cup behind the gift bags, and her chilling calmness while watching Lily collapse.
“The evidence presented by the prosecution is overwhelming,” the judge announced, his voice echoing through the solemn courtroom. “The defendant will be held without bond until the formal trial date next month. Given the severity of the charges—attempted murder in the second degree and aggravated child abuse—the state is pursuing a maximum sentence.”
Claire buried her face in her hands as the bailiff led her back toward the holding cells.

Walking out of the courthouse into the bright summer sunshine, I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders. The law was working. The truth was out. There were no more secrets, no more hiding behind polite family gatherings and hidden jealousy.
Mark wrapped his arm around my shoulders, kissing the top of my head. “It’s almost over, El. We can finally breathe.”
