Chapter 6 - Healing and Homecoming

Three days later, the doctors finally cleared Lily to come home. The pink balloons in the backyard had deflated, and the leftover cake had long since been thrown away, but the warmth of our family had returned tenfold.
Neighbors had dropped off groceries, flowers, and cards wishing Lily a speedy recovery. The community had rallied around us, horrified by what Claire had done, wrapping us in a cocoon of support and kindness.
When we walked through the front door, Lily immediately ran to her playroom to check on her stuffed unicorn collection.
“Look, Mommy! Sparkles is okay!” she cheered, holding up a plush toy.
I smiled, my heart swelling with a bittersweet mixture of relief and lingering caution. We still had a long road ahead of us. There would be therapy for all of us, court dates to face, and a gaping wound in our extended family history that would never truly heal. But looking at Mark and Lily laughing together in the living room, I knew we had survived the worst storm imaginable.
Later that afternoon, my mother came over. She looked ten years older, her eyes red-rimmed from days of crying.
“I went to the precinct,” my mother said quietly, sitting at the kitchen table. “I spoke with a lawyer. I need you to know, Elena… I am cutting Claire out of my will entirely. What she did… it’s unforgivable. I will never visit her, and I will never excuse her actions.”
I poured her a cup of tea and sat down opposite her, placing my hand over hers.

“Thank you, Mom,” I said softly. “We just need to focus on keeping Lily safe and moving forward.”
“She’s going to face true justice,” my mother nodded, her voice firm. “The prosecutor says with the video and the medical records, it’s an open-and-shut case.”
