Chapter 4 - Decades of Resentment

The quiet of the evening porch was shattered by Claire’s sudden, chilling laughter. It was high-pitched and erratic, stripped of any sisterly warmth.
“You think you’re so perfect, don’t you, Elena?” Claire spat, crossing her arms. “Always the golden child. The one who got the scholarship, the one who inherited Grandma’s vintage jewelry, the one who married Mark—the man I met first, in case you conveniently forgot!”
My mother gasped, clutching her chest. “Claire! What are you saying? That is your niece in a hospital bed!”
“She’s a constant reminder of everything I couldn't have,” Claire snarled, her eyes darting toward the police officer, who was now stepping closer, hand resting casually on his utility belt. “Every holiday, every family gathering, it’s always ‘Look at Elena’s house, look at Elena’s happy family, look at Lily’s adorable achievements.’ I just wanted to teach you a lesson. I wanted you to feel helpless for once. Just a scare! I didn't mean to—to go that far with the dosage!”
The officer stepped forward, pulling out a pair of metallic handcuffs. “Claire Vance? You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
“You can’t arrest me! We’re family!” Claire shrieked as the cold steel clicked around her wrists, her designer jacket twisting awkwardly as she was pulled away from the porch swing.
“You tried to murder our daughter,” Mark said, his voice terrifyingly steady. He didn’t raise his voice, but every word carried the weight of absolute finality. “There is no family left here.”
As the cruiser’s red and blue lights faded down the dark suburban street, a profound, hollow silence settled over the house.

My mother was weeping uncontrollably on the steps, mourning not just Claire’s actions, but the absolute destruction of our family tree. I leaned against Mark’s shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The nightmare of the afternoon had led to an arrest, but my mind was entirely focused on one place: the hospital room where Lily was still sleeping.
“Let’s go back to our daughter,” Mark whispered, wrapping his arm tightly around my waist.
