Chapter 6 - The Network of Truth

By 4:00 p.m., the story had exploded across the state.

Richard sat in the waiting room of the Nashville General Hospital while medical staff treated Emily for a mild concussion, a fractured cheekbone, and soft-tissue bruising. He held a warm cup of coffee in his hands, perfectly relaxed, while his phone buzzed incessantly with calls from attorneys, media outlets, and high-ranking contacts.

He answered one call.

"Richard? It’s Arthur."

Arthur Pendelton was the Senior Managing Partner at Vance & Pendelton, the premier corporate litigation firm in Tennessee, and an old military buddy who owed Richard his life from a extraction operation twenty years ago.

"Arthur," Richard said. "Did you receive the files I emailed you?"

"I did," Arthur said, laughing softly over the phone. "Richard, this isn't just a divorce case. This is a complete corporate execution. You've uncovered wire fraud, tax evasion, and investor misrepresentation totaling over fourteen million dollars."

"I don't care about the money, Arthur," Richard said firmly. "I want my daughter free. I want every non-disclosure agreement he forced her to sign completely voided. And I want him stripped of every asset he used to intimidate her."

"Consider it done," Arthur assured him. "By six o'clock tonight, I am filing an emergency petition for an ex-parte restraining order, full asset freeze on his personal accounts, and a motion for complete emergency dissolution of the marital property. With the security video footage Vance’s team recovered, Ethan won't even be granted bail."

"What about his corporate board?"

"They're already holding an emergency meeting," Arthur chuckled. "Word got out that federal prosecutors are reviewing the flash drive. The board is voting to remove him as CEO within the hour to save the company’s stock value."

Richard hung up the phone just as the doctor walked out of Emily’s room.

"Colonel Hayes?" the doctor called out. "She’s ready to go home. The physical injuries will heal with time and rest. She’s strong."

Richard walked into the room. Emily was sitting on the edge of the examination table, wearing a clean sweatshirt her father had brought her. Her face bore dark bruises, but for the first time in years, the crushing weight of fear was gone from her eyes.

"Ready to go, sweetheart?" Richard asked gently.

Emily looked up at her father, tears welling in her eyes again—not of pain, but of overwhelming relief.

"Dad..." she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "How did you do all of that? How did you know?"

Richard hugged her tight, resting his chin on her head. "A good commander never leaves his soldiers behind, Emily. And a father never stops protecting his child. Let’s go home."
