Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Richard wrapped a warm, protective arm around Emily, pulling her gently behind him as Ethan scrambled backward on his hands and knees, wheezing and clutching his chest.
"You... you assaulted me!" Ethan gasped, his face pale with rage. "I’ll have you put in prison for the rest of your life!"
"You can try," Richard replied smoothly, helping Emily down the stairs. "But first, you're going to listen to how the rest of your afternoon is going to play out."
"You have nothing!" Ethan yelled, standing up on shaky legs, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from a side table. "You're a nobody! I’m Ethan Caldwell! I have fifty million dollars in capital funding closing tomorrow morning! I’m untouchable!"
"That funding was closing tomorrow morning," Richard corrected calmly, pulling the black leather notebook and the encrypted flash drive from his jacket and tossing them onto the polished marble table between them.
Ethan froze, his eyes dropping to the black notebook.
"What is that?" Ethan demanded, his voice suddenly losing its booming confidence.
"That," Richard said, "is six years of forensic accounting."
Silence fell over the massive foyer. Outside, the distant sound of approaching police sirens began to wail through the quiet Bellevue hills.
Ethan’s eyes darted toward the window, then back to the flash drive. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" Richard asked, taking Emily’s coat from the rack and wrapping it gently over her shivering shoulders. "In 2021, Caldwell Digital Solutions won the Department of Transportation logistics contract. A twenty-two million dollar award. But three months later, four million was routed through an offshore shell entity registered in Grand Cayman under the name 'E.C. Holdings'."
Ethan’s face drained of color.
"In 2023," Richard continued in a flat, clinical tone, "you began using company funds to pay off three former executive assistants who filed confidential workplace abuse claims against you. You covered those payoffs by falsifying software licensing expenses."
"Where... how did you get that?" Ethan stammered, dropping the brass paperweight. It hit the floor with a hollow thud.
"I served as the Chief of Staff for Army Logistics and Cyber Security for eight years, Ethan," Richard said coldly. "You thought because I wore denim and drove an old truck that I was stupid. You thought because I was quiet, I was blind. I didn't stop you earlier because Emily wasn't ready to leave you, and I knew if I struck too soon, you would isolate her even further."

Emily looked up at her father, her eyes wide with shock and profound realization. She had thought she was completely alone, trapped in a golden cage, unaware that her father had been silently building a mountain of steel around her all along.
"Today," Richard said, pointing at Emily’s bruised face, "you crossed the line from corporate thief to physical violent felon. And today, the trap springs."
