Chapter 3 - Breaching the Fortress

The mansion was eerily quiet from the outside. Immaculate landscaping, pristine fountains, and double tall glass doors greeted him. But behind the grandeur, Richard saw the signs of a struggle through the foyer window: a overturned vase, scattered lilies on the Italian marble, and a dropped framed portrait.

Richard didn't knock.

He gripped the heavy brass door handle, found it locked, and unhesitatingly pulled a hardened steel entry tool from his pocket. Within three seconds, the deadbolt popped with a sharp snap. He pushed the door open, slipping silently inside.

"Emily!" his voice echoed, loud, controlled, and echoing with absolute command.

Silence answered him for two long seconds. Then came a muffled gasp from the upper floor, followed by heavy, hurried footsteps.

At the top of the grand double staircase stood Ethan Caldwell.

He wore a tailored linen shirt, rolled at the sleeves, though his hair was disheveled and his knuckles were red. His face, usually calibrated for cable news interviews, flushed with furious disbelief when he saw Richard standing in his foyer.

"Richard?" Ethan sneered, descending two steps while holding a glass of scotch. "What the hell are you doing breaking into my home? Get the hell out before I call the Chief of Police and have you locked up."

Richard didn't flinch. He walked slowly toward the base of the stairs, his eyes locking onto Ethan's with zero emotion.

"Where is my daughter, Ethan?"

"She’s fine! She had an hysterical breakdown, like she always does," Ethan spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of arrogance and hidden adrenaline. "She slipped in the master bedroom. I was trying to calm her down. This is private marital business. You have no right—"

"Where is she?" Richard repeated, stepping onto the first riser.

"Don't take another step!" Ethan barked, slamming his glass down on the banister, shattering the crystal. "You're a washed-up military dinosaur living off a pension! I run this town! I own the police force, I own the courts, and I own everything in this house! Step off my stairs or I’ll ruin whatever life you have left!"

From the top of the hall, a bedroom door clicked open.

Emily stumbled out into the hallway.

Her hair was torn from her face, her dress was frayed at the shoulder, and a dark, swelling bruise was already forming rapidly over her left cheekbone. Her lips were trembling, and she clutched her arm against her ribs.

"Dad..." she sobbed, collapsing against the balcony railing. "He... he took my keys... he smashed my phone..."

The sight of his daughter's battered face sent a spike of cold fire through Richard’s chest, but thirty years of command kept his hand steady and his mind razor-sharp.

He didn't scream. He didn't rush Ethan blindly.

Instead, Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out a small digital recorder, pressing stop.

"Thank you, Ethan," Richard said softly. "That threat was clear enough."

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly, then narrowed into a vicious scowl. "You think a little recording scares me? I have ten attorneys on retainer who will have that thrown out of court before dinner! She won't testify against me. She never does. Tell him, Emily! Tell him you're clumsy!"

Emily shrank back, tears streaming down her pale face.

Richard looked at his daughter, his eyes softening completely. "Emily, walk down these stairs. Walk past him. Look at me, sweetheart—only at me."

"Don't you dare move, Emily!" Ethan shouted, stepping across her path.

Richard moved.

In a fraction of a second, the old Colonel closed the distance up the marble stairs with explosive speed that defied his age. Before Ethan could react or raise his arm, Richard grasped Ethan’s wrist, twisted it inward with lever force, and planted a firm palm directly into Ethan’s chest.

Ethan crashed backward onto the landing, gasping for air as his windpipe momentarily seized.

"You touch her again," Richard whispered, leaning down so close Ethan could smell the coffee on his breath, "and you won't live long enough to talk to your lawyers."
