Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of Sovereign

Three months later, the transition of the Whitmore Enterprise was complete. The transition had been bloody in some sectors, but Adrien’s iron fist had ensured a swift and decisive victory. The criminal elements of Chicago had been pushed out, replaced by a massive, legitimate corporate entity that focused on community redevelopment and clean shipping infrastructure.
Vanessa and Julian had been thoroughly dealt with. Using the financial records and the audio recordings, Adrien had handed them over to the federal authorities along with enough evidence of their independent corporate fraud to ensure they would spend the next thirty years in separate maximum-security penitentiaries. They had wanted his wealth; instead, they received a cage.
On a beautiful, warm autumn afternoon, the gardens of the Whitmore estate out in the countryside were bathed in golden sunlight. The estate, which used to be a heavily fortified compound, had been transformed. The high concrete walls had been replaced with beautiful wrought-iron fencing covered in climbing roses.
Adrien stood on the wide stone terrace, looking out over the lawns. He wore a simple white linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked younger, the deep lines of stress and paranoia completely erased from his face.
The French doors behind him opened, and Nenah stepped out.
She wore a simple, elegant sage-green sundress that caught the autumn breeze. Her dark hair was loose, falling over her shoulders. She carried two glasses of iced tea.
"You're thinking too loud again," she said with a soft laugh, walking up to him and handing him a glass.
Adrien smiled, the warm, genuine smile that only she could bring out. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. "I was just thinking about the first morning you spoke to me in that hospital room."
"Oh, please don't remind me," Nenah blushed, hiding her face against his shoulder. "I was rambling. I thought you were completely out of it. If I had known you could hear every word, I would have been terrified."
"It was the best thing that ever happened to me," Adrien said softly, kissing the top of her head. "You told me that love doesn't wait for an answer. It stays because that's what love does."
Nenah looked up at him, her eyes bright with happiness. "And I meant it. Look at what you’ve done since then. You saved so many families by taking the weapons off the streets. You built community centers, created jobs. You turned the light on, Adrien."
"We turned it on," he corrected, turning her completely to face him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Nenah’s breath caught.
Adrien opened the box, revealing a classic, elegant emerald ring surrounded by small, brilliant diamonds. It wasn't flashily large like the one he had given Vanessa to show off to the cameras; it was tasteful, beautiful, and timeless.

"Nenah Hayes," Adrien said, his voice dropping to that deep, steady register that had once commanded an empire, but now belonged entirely to her. "You stayed by my side when I was a ghost. Will you stay by my side while I learn how to be a man?"
Tears of pure joy spilled over Nenah’s eyelashes. She nodded, her smile radiant. "Yes, Adrien. A thousand times, yes."
