Chapter 8 - Cleansing the Syndicate

The private neurological wing had been completely cleared of Julian’s guards. In their place stood Adrien’s elite personal security detail.
Adrien walked down the quiet hallway, his heart rate accelerating in a way it never had during his confrontation in the boardroom. He stopped outside the door to his former room. He took a deep breath, smoothing the front of his vest, before turning the handle.
Nenah was inside, packing her personal belongings into a small canvas bag. The hospital administration had put her on administrative leave following the "incident" the night before, terrified of the legal liabilities involving the Whitmore family.
She looked up as the door opened. When she saw Adrien standing there, healthy and powerful, a beautiful, relieved smile broke across her face.
"Mr. Whitmore," she said softly, setting her bag down. "You look... like yourself again."
"I am myself again," Adrien said, walking into the room and closing the door behind him. He looked around the sterile space that had become the birthplace of his new life. "I heard they suspended you."
Nenah gave a small, philosophical shrug. "It's alright. The hospital has to protect its reputation. I was just a temporary maid anyway. I’ll find another house to clean."
"No, you won't," Adrien said instantly, his voice firm but filled with an underlying gentleness.
Nenah blinked, confused. "Sir?"
Adrien walked closer, stopping just a few feet away from her. He looked down at her hands—the same hands that had bathed his forehead, that had held his cold fingers when the rest of the world was trying to bury him.
"For twenty years, I lived in a world where everyone wanted to tear a piece of me away," Adrien said, his voice rich with emotion. "I thought everyone was a viper. So I became a monster to protect myself. But while I lay in that bed, pretending to be dead, you stood beside me and gave me the only real thing I’ve ever had."
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering hers. "You showed me kindness when I had nothing to give you in return. You protected me from people who could have killed you. You are not going back to cleaning houses, Nenah."
May you like
Nenah looked up at him, her chest heaving slightly as she processed his words. "Mr. Whitmore... I’m just a regular person. I don't belong in your world. I saw the cars outside, the men with guns. Your world is dangerous."
"Then I will change the world," Adrien promised, his eyes burning with an absolute sincerity that left no room for doubt. "I’ve already started. I’m tearing down the old empire. I’m cleaning it out until there is nothing left but something we can both be proud of. I don't want you in my old world, Nenah. I want you to help me build the new one."
