Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Vipers

The morning of the board meeting arrived, clear and crisp. The executive boardroom on the top floor of the Whitmore Tower looked out over the sprawling Chicago skyline.
Vanessa sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, dressed in a sharp, tailored white suit that screamed purity and authority. Julian sat to her right, a thick silk scarf tied carefully around his neck to hide the deep purple bruises left by Adrien’s fingers. He looked pale, his hands trembling slightly as he shuffled the legal documents.
The board members, a collection of older, hardened men who controlled the various factions of the Whitmore syndicate, sat in silence.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Vanessa began, her voice smooth and practiced. "As you know, my fiancé, Adrien, remains in a critical, unresponsive state at the hospital. The medical consensus is grim. In this time of crisis, the empire cannot afford to be leaderless. The streets are already sensing weakness."
She signaled to Julian, who pushed the power of attorney documents to the center of the table.
"Julian and I have drafted an interim joint leadership agreement," Vanessa continued. "We have the legal backing to assume control of all operational assets until Adrien either recovers... or passes. We need the board’s signature to formalize the transition today."
One of the older board members, a veteran named Frank, narrowed his eyes. "Adrien’s right-hand man, Marcus, isn't here. Where is he? He controls the enforcement wings. We don't sign anything without his sign-off."
"Marcus has been... reassigned," Julian lied, his voice raspy. "He was found misappropriating funds during this crisis. He is no longer a part of this organization."
"Is that so?"
The voice didn't come from anyone at the table. It came from the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom.
The doors swung open with a deafening crash.
Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. Julian stood up so fast his chair flipped over backward.
Adrien Whitmore walked into the room.
He was wearing a perfectly tailored, midnight-black three-piece suit. His posture was commanding, his stride slow and deliberate. There was no sign of illness, no trace of weakness. Behind him walked Marcus, looking like a grim reaper, followed by four heavily armed security guards.
The boardroom erupted into stunned silence.
Adrien walked down the length of the table, his eyes locked onto Vanessa, who had turned completely pale, her mouth slightly open in utter disbelief.
"A-Adrien..." Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking. "You... the hospital said..."
"The hospital said what you paid them to say, Vanessa," Adrien said smoothly, reaching the head of the table. He didn't sit. He simply leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the mahogany surface, towering over his fiancée. "Did you really think a few drops of poison and a corrupt doctor could take what belongs to me?"
Julian tried to back away toward the side exit, but Marcus stepped into his path, blocking the door with a cold smile.
"Frank," Adrien said, looking at the veteran board member without breaking his gaze from Vanessa. "Are the accounts secure?"
"Yes, Boss," Frank replied, a grin spreading across his old face. "We didn't sign a damn thing."
"Good." Adrien straightened up. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a digital audio recorder, throwing it onto the center of the table. He pressed play.
“You could command a room full of killers, but you couldn’t manage your own stress...” Vanessa’s recorded voice echoed through the boardroom, followed by Julian’s voice detailing the plan to murder Adrien in his bed.
The board members looked at each other, their expressions turning lethal. In the underworld, ambition was tolerated; treason against the boss was a death sentence.

"It's a fabrication!" Vanessa screamed, standing up, her composure completely shattering. "Adrien, please! He forced me! Julian forced me to do it! He threatened my life!"
"Save it, Vanessa," Adrien said, his voice colder than the winter wind outside. "You always were an excellent actress. But the show is over."
