Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The night before the scheduled board meeting, the tension broke into open hostility.
It was past midnight. The hospital corridors were silent, illuminated only by the dim emergency lights. Adrien lay in the dark, his senses heightened. He heard the door click open roughly.
Two sets of footsteps entered. Julian and a man whose voice Adrien recognized instantly—Dr. Evans, the corrupt chief of neurology whom Julian had been courting with bribes.
"Are the cameras looped?" Julian asked, his voice tight.
"Yes," Dr. Evans replied, sounding nervous. "The security feed for this entire wing will show a pre-recorded loop for the next twenty minutes. But we have to be fast. If the nursing staff does a random check, we’re finished."
"Just do it," Julian ordered. "Inject the paralytic into his IV. It will look like a secondary stroke brought on by neurological collapse. By the morning, the autopsy will show nothing but natural degradation."
Adrien’s body prepared for action. The game was over. He couldn't play dead if they were about to make it a reality. He prepared to open his eyes, throw Julian through the window, and end this charade in blood.
But before he could move, the door flew open.
"What are you doing in here?!" Nenah’s voice rang out, loud and terrified, breaking the silence of the room. She had come in for an unscheduled linen replacement, tracking the unusual movement in the hallway.
Julian spun around, his face twisting into a mask of pure malice. "You again. I thought I told you to stay out of this wing."
"I am doing my job, sir," Nenah said, her voice shaking but resolute as she stepped between Dr. Evans and Adrien’s IV line. She saw the syringe in the doctor's hand. "What is that? That isn't his prescribed medication. The charts say no changes until morning."
"Get out of the way, girl," Julian stepped toward her, raising a heavy hand. "You're meddling in things that are way above your pay grade."
"No!" Nenah shouted, refusing to move. She grabbed the edge of the IV pole, anchoring herself. "I won't let you hurt him! I know what you’re doing! I’ve heard the way you talk about him! You're trying to kill him!"
Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Nenah by the front of her cardigan, lifting her off her feet and throwing her violently against the wall. She let out a sharp cry of pain as her head hit the drywall, sliding down to the floor, stunned and disoriented.
That was the final mistake.
Adrien’s eyes snapped open. The monitor behind him didn't just spike—it flatlined as he reached up and tore the sensors clean off his chest.
Before Julian or Dr. Evans could even process the sudden movement, Adrien rose from the bed like a ghost escaping the grave. His face was a mask of absolute, terrifying wrath. The three days of forced stillness had accumulated into an explosive, lethal reservoir of energy.
Julian turned, his eyes widening in pure horror as he saw his stepbrother standing fully upright, towering over him in the dim light. "A-Adrien...?"
Adrien didn't speak. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second. His large hand wrapped around Julian’s throat, slamming him against the heavy metal medicine cabinet with enough force to shatter the glass.
"You dare bring your filth into my presence?" Adrien’s voice was a low, demonic growl that rattled Julian’s bones. He squeezed, cutting off Julian’s air entirely. Julian’s face turned purple, his hands clawing uselessly at Adrien’s iron grip.
Dr. Evans dropped the syringe, turning to run for the door.
But the door was already blocked. Marcus stepped into the room, his massive frame filling the doorway. He caught Dr. Evans by the collar, throwing him to the ground like a sack of garbage.
"Secure the doctor, Marcus," Adrien ordered, his eyes never leaving Julian’s terrified face.
"With pleasure, Boss," Marcus said, dragging the weeping doctor into the bathroom to tie him up.
Adrien looked down at Julian, who was losing consciousness from the lack of oxygen. With a look of profound disgust, Adrien threw his stepbrother to the floor. Julian collapsed in a heap, coughing violently, gasping for air.
Adrien didn't look at him again. Instead, his entire demeanor softened as he rushed over to the corner of the room where Nenah lay against the wall.
"Nenah," Adrien said, his voice completely changing, filled with a raw, desperate panic he hadn't felt in a lifetime. He knelt beside her, his large hands carefully cradling her shoulders. "Nenah, look at me."
Nenah blinked, her vision clearing slowly. She looked up at the man who was supposed to be in a coma. His dark eyes were filled with an intense, burning concern—not for himself, but for her.

"Mr... Mr. Whitmore?" she whispered, reaching up to touch his face to ensure he was real. "You're awake..."
"I'm awake," Adrien whispered back, his thumb gently brushing a stray tear from her cheek. "Because of you. You protected me. Now, it's my turn to protect you."
