Chapter 7 - The Awakening

"Marcus," Adrien commanded, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom. "Take them down to the holding cells beneath the warehouse. I want them kept separate. No phones, no lawyers, no sunlight."
"No! Adrien, you can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as two heavy-set guards grabbed her by her polished arms, dragging her away from the table. Her white designer suit was wrinkled, her perfect hair falling into her face as her composure completely disintegrated. "I loved you! I did everything for you!"
"You loved my shadow, Vanessa," Adrien said quietly, remembering Nenah’s words. "But you never cared if the roots were dying."
Julian didn't even fight. He was completely broken, staring at the floor as Marcus dragged him out by the collar of his expensive coat.
Once the room was cleared of the traitors, a heavy silence fell over the remaining board members. They looked at Adrien with a renewed sense of fear and respect. He had survived an internal coup without firing a single shot, turning their own weapons against them.
Adrien walked to the head of the table and sat down in the high-backed leather chair. He looked at the men who held the keys to Chicago's underworld.
"The transition begins today," Adrien announced, his tone leaving no room for debate. "We are cleaning house. Every captain, every lieutenant who showed even a moment of hesitation or support for Julian over the last three days will be stripped of their territory and exiled from the city. If they resist, eliminate them."
The board members nodded in unison.
"And one more thing," Adrien added, his expression turning solemn. "The nature of our business is changing. We are divesting from the street operations. The narcotics, the protection rackets—we sell them off to the lesser families by the end of the month. We are moving entirely into legitimate logistics, shipping, and real estate."
Frank frowned, leaning forward. "Boss, that’s half our revenue. The men won't like giving up the streets. It's quick cash."
"Then the men can leave," Adrien replied sharply. "I am no longer interested in ruling an empire built on the blood of desperate people. We have enough clean wealth to sustain us for generations. If anyone has an issue with this direction, they can speak now."
No one spoke. The memory of what had just happened to Julian and Vanessa was too fresh.
"Good. Meeting adjourned."
Adrien stood up and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the executives to process the new dawn of the Whitmore syndicate. He walked down the private elevator, his mind completely clear for the first time in ten years.
