Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

The following spring, exactly five years and six months after that fateful ultrasound appointment at Harrington Women’s Center, I hosted a private charity gala in the grand ballroom of the Carlyle Hotel—the very room where Evelyn had once pushed a cream folder across a table and told me I was replaceable.
This time, the room was filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine friends.
Victor Vance stood at the podium, raising a glass of sparkling cider in a toast.
“To resilience, to justice, and to the true heart of this family,” Victor announced, looking directly toward our table. “To Anna, Theo, and Lily.”
The room erupted in applause.
Theo and Lily, dressed in their finest party clothes, grinned from ear to ear as guests clapped for them. Lily leaned over to me and whispered, “Mommy, are we famous?”

“We’re just us, sweetheart,” I whispered back, kissing the top of her head. “And we are home.”
As the orchestra began to play a soft, uplifting melody, I looked around the room. The ghosts of the past—Julian’s betrayal, Evelyn’s tyranny, the cold hospital room, the tabloid headlines—were all gone, washed away by time, truth, and unyielding strength.
