Chapter 6 - The Matriarch’s Last Stand

With Julian behind bars, Evelyn Sterling realized she was entirely isolated.

The board of directors formally stripped her of her honorary chair title, and the probate court initiated a full audit of the Sterling family trust’s historical transactions—uncovering decades of financial manipulation and suppressed assets that Evelyn had orchestrated to consolidate her control.

Refusing to surrender quietly, Evelyn called an emergency press conference at her Park Avenue estate.

Surrounded by a battery of microphones, she clutched her cane and glared into the lenses.

“This is a hostile corporate takeover engineered by a bitter, vindictive former mistress using fabricated documents!” Evelyn announced to the reporters. “Sterling Enterprises was built by the Sterling family blood, not by opportunists who slip through the back door!”

She had planned to paint herself as the heroic matriarch defending a corporate dynasty. But she had miscalculated one crucial detail.

Mara Chen and I walked out onto the steps of the courtyard right as her speech reached its climax, flanked by federal prosecutors.

Mara stepped up to the microphone, holding a thick legal portfolio.

“Mrs. Sterling,” Mara said clearly, her voice cutting through the murmurs of the press corps. “You are currently being served with an arrest warrant for subornation of perjury, wire fraud, and conspiracy in the falsification of federal court records.”

Evelyn staggered back, her face turning chalk-white. “You... you can’t touch me. I am the Sterling family!”

“Not anymore,” I said, stepping up beside Mara. I looked directly into the cameras broadcasting live across the nation. “The Sterling name was never about tyranny, exclusion, or deceit. It was about legacy, protection, and integrity. Effective today, Sterling Enterprises is officially rebranding. We are establishing the Sterling-Chen Foundation, dedicating fifty percent of all corporate dividends to maternal healthcare and legal advocacy for families victims of corporate fraud.”

Evelyn dropped her microphone. It clattered against the stone steps with a loud, metallic screech. She clutched her chest, stumbled backward, and was caught by her remaining private security guards as flashbulbs blinded the courtyard.

The matriarch’s reign had finally come to an end.
