Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Three days later, the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission formally froze all of Julian’s personal assets, pending the investigation into corporate fraud and perjury. His credit cards were declined at a luxury coffee shop on Madison Avenue—an embarrassing moment captured by a freelance paparazzo and broadcast across morning talk shows.
Julian tried to corner me in the underground parking garage of Sterling Tower as I arrived for my first official board meeting as Chairperson.
He looked disheveled. His tailored suit was unpressed, his hair messy, the confident swagger of the billionaire CEO entirely gone.
“Anna, please,” Julian said, stepping out from behind a concrete pillar. He blocked my path, his hands raised defensively. “Let’s talk. Just the two of us. Drop the criminal charges. We can settle this like adults. We can share custody... we can rebuild.”
My security detail instantly moved in, but I raised a hand to stop them. I walked up to Julian, stopping just a few feet away.
“Rebuild what, Julian?” I asked, my voice devoid of emotion. “The life you destroyed on a live television broadcast five years ago? The trust you shattered while I was sitting in a clinic listening to my babies' heartbeats?”
“I made a mistake!” he pleaded, his voice breaking. “Scarlett meant nothing! It was a publicity stunt for the studio, you know how Hollywood works—”
“No, Julian,” I interrupted sharply. “It wasn’t a mistake. It was a choice. A deliberate, calculated choice. You thought I was weak. You thought my silence was surrender.”
“Mother pushed me into it!” Julian grabbed at straws, his desperation pathetic to witness. “She said you were a liability! She handled the lawyers!”
“And you signed your name to it,” I replied. “Just like you signed away your right to be a father. You aren’t here because you want to rebuild a family, Julian. You’re here because your accounts are frozen, your credit cards are declined, and you have nowhere left to run.”
Before Julian could answer, the flashing lights of federal marshals' cruisers appeared at the entrance of the parking garage. Two agents stepped out, walking directly toward us with handcuffs ready.
“Julian Sterling,” the lead marshal announced. “You are under arrest for securities fraud, perjury, and conspiracy to commit identity theft.”
Julian stared in horror as the cuffs were clamped onto his wrists. As they led him past me, he looked back with eyes full of utter defeat.

“Anna... please...”
“Goodbye, Julian,” I said quietly.
