Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

Chaos erupted instantly.

Board members stood up shouting over one another. Financial analysts furiously tapped on their phones, watching Sterling stock plunge twenty points in after-hours trading as the injunction hit the public ticker. Scarlett threw her champagne flute against the wall, shards of crystal scattering across the imported Persian rug.

“This is an outrage!” roared Arthur Pendelton, the senior board director and Julian’s longtime crony. “We have an eight-billion-dollar merger with Global Tech closing in forty-eight hours! We cannot halt operations for a paternity stunt!”

“It is no stunt, Arthur,” a deep voice echoed from the double doors at the back of the boardroom.

The crowd parted. Stepping into the light was Victor Vance, the legendary eighty-two-year-old venture capitalist and former co-founder of Sterling Enterprises who had been in forced retirement for a decade. He walked with a cane, but his eyes were razor-sharp.

Evelyn paled visibly. “Victor... you have no business here. You retired years ago.”

“I retired from day-to-day management, Evelyn, not from protecting the bloodline of my oldest friend, Arthur Sterling,” Victor replied, walking slowly to the head of the table. He looked down at Julian with profound disappointment. “I warned you when you started parading that actress around. You thought you could rewrite family law because you held a CEO title. But the trust was ironclad. I helped write it.”

Victor turned his gaze to me, softening his expression. He gave me a respectful nod. “Welcome home, Anna. And happy birthday to the true heirs.”

Theo smiled up at the old man. “Hello, sir. My mom says we get to look at the big computers upstairs now.”

Victor let out a booming laugh that cut through the tension in the room. “Indeed you do, young man. Indeed you do.”

Julian slammed his hand onto the table, finally losing whatever corporate veneer he had left. “You can’t do this! I built this company into a global empire over the last five years!”

“You built it on a foundation of sand, Julian,” I said, stepping right up to him. I was shorter than him, but at that moment, standing in my tailored navy blazer with my children behind me, I towered over him. “You thought my silence meant weakness. You thought buying a Queens apartment and a gag order would keep your dirty secrets buried. You traded your family for tabloid headlines.”

I reached out, and with a swift, calculated motion, I reached up and pulled the expensive platinum watch off his wrist—the exact anniversary gift I had given him five years ago, the one he wore while marrying Scarlett.

“This belongs to me, too,” I said calmly, slipping it into my pocket.

“Security!” Julian yelled frantically, turning to the guards. But the guards didn’t move. They had already received digital updates from the building’s master administrator—the system now recognized me as the primary building authority via the trust transfer.

“Mr. Sterling,” the lead guard said flatly. “You are asked to surrender your building access badge and vacate the premises.”
