Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

The autumn leaves turned golden, then blanketed the city in pristine winter white as the year drew to a close.
I sat in my corner office on the sixtieth floor of Sterling Tower. The room was no longer cold and intimidating; I had filled it with warm mahogany furniture, family photographs, and green plants that breathed life into the space.
Mara Chen walked in, carrying a cup of artisan coffee and a thick legal file.
“Annual audit is complete, Anna,” Mara said with a satisfied smile, dropping the file onto my desk. “Every subsidiary account is clean, the philanthropic endowments are fully funded, and the board has unanimously voted to make your CEO appointment permanent.”
I leaned back in my leather chair, taking a sip of tea. “Thank you, Mara. I couldn’t have done any of this without you standing by my door five years ago when I made that desperate phone call from a hotel lobby.”
“You didn't need much help, Anna,” Mara chuckled, sitting down opposite me. “You just needed the truth on your side. Speaking of which... how are the twins handling kindergarten?”
“They’re thriving,” I smiled warmly. “Theo is obsessed with civil engineering, and Lily is already negotiating extra recess time like a seasoned litigator.”

Mara laughed out loud. “Like mother, like daughter. So, what’s next for the unstoppable Chairperson of Sterling Enterprises?”
“Next?” I looked out the massive glass window, watching the snow gently dust the rooftops of Manhattan. “Next is living. Fully, freely, and without looking over our shoulders anymore.”
