Chapter 9 - Justice in the Garden
The fallout was swift and devastating for the Vance family.
Armed with the audio recording, the original note, and the photographs I had taken of the locked door, Marcus filed a counter-suit that completely dismantled Daniel’s custody petition. The judge was appalled by the evidence. Not only was the petition thrown out, but a restraining order was immediately issued against Daniel and Victoria, prohibiting them from coming within 1,000 feet of Lily or me.
But it didn't stop there. The local police department opened a criminal investigation into Victoria for child endangerment and unlawful imprisonment. When they searched her estate, they uncovered a paper trail of fraudulent financial transactions, proving that she and Daniel had been planning to embezzle funds from several other family trusts to keep their sinking business afloat.
Within a month, Daniel and Victoria Vance were indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and child endangerment. The high-society circles they so desperately clung to abandoned them overnight. Their estate was foreclosed, and their name was dragged through the mud in every local newspaper.
I remember the day the trial ended. I stood on the steps of the courthouse, holding Lily’s hand. Daniel was led out in handcuffs, his head bowed, his face shielded from the flashing cameras of the reporters. He looked small. He looked defeated.
