Chapter 4 - The Secret of the Trust Fund
The next morning, I woke up early, my mind buzzing with a mixture of fear and determination. I couldn't run forever. I needed answers, and I needed legal protection.
While Lily was still sleeping, I called Marcus, a long-time family friend and the lawyer who had handled David’s estate. When he answered, his voice was filled with deep concern.
"Rachel? Thank God. I’ve been trying to reach you. I heard what happened at the wedding. Daniel’s mother has been calling around, telling everyone you had a nervous breakdown and ran off with Lily."
"A nervous breakdown?" I scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "Marcus, they locked Lily in a room. I found a note. They are trying to take her trust fund."
There was a long silence on the other end of the line. "Tell me everything," Marcus said, his tone instantly shifting to professional gravity.
I explained the locked room, Victoria’s chilling words, and the note Lily had found in Victoria’s purse. I read the sentence about the trust and the guardianship papers.
"Rachel, listen to me very carefully," Marcus said. "Under the terms of David's trust, if you marry, your husband does not automatically get access to the funds. However, there is a clause. If you sign a joint guardianship agreement—which Daniel’s lawyers requested from my office last week under the guise of 'streamlining family health insurance'—he would have equal administrative rights over Lily's assets."
"I never signed it," I whispered.
"But they were planning on making you sign it," Marcus countered. "Probably during your honeymoon, when you were relaxed and trusting. Once Daniel had administrative rights, he could legally petition to move those funds into an offshore account or a joint family trust. And if Lily were... 'removed' from the household, say, sent to a boarding school abroad or placed under the care of a distant relative, they would have total control of the money without her ever knowing."
My stomach churned. They didn't just want to banish my daughter; they wanted to rob her of the future her father had worked so hard to secure.

"What do I do, Marcus?"
"You stay hidden for now," Marcus advised. "I’m going to run a deep background check on Daniel and Victoria. If they are this desperate for two million dollars, they are likely facing severe financial trouble. We need leverage. But Rachel—be careful. If they realize you have that note, they will do whatever it takes to get it back."
