Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Shield

For the next three days, the motel room became our fortress. I bought Lily some basic clothes, coloring books, and toys from a nearby department store. I tried my best to keep her entertained, pretending we were on a secret spy mission, but she was a smart girl. She knew something was wrong.

"Mommy," she said one afternoon, looking up from her coloring book. "Is Daniel mad at us?"

I knelt down beside her, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "It doesn't matter if he's mad, sweetie. What matters is that you and I are safe. Daniel and his mother... they weren't the right people for us. And that's okay. We have each other."

"I don't like Victoria," Lily whispered, her eyes cast down. "She told me that if I cried, she would make sure I never saw you again."

A wave of pure, maternal rage washed over me, so strong it took my breath away. I squeezed Lily’s shoulders gently. "She will never, ever keep us apart. I promise you that, Lily. I will fight the whole world before I let anyone hurt you."

Later that evening, my phone rang. It was Marcus.

"Rachel, I found it," Marcus said, his voice tense. "You were right to run. Victoria’s family estate, the one they used for the wedding venue? It's heavily leveraged. They are on the brink of bankruptcy. Daniel’s logistics company is also drowning in debt—he’s facing multiple lawsuits for breach of contract and unpaid creditors. They needed your late husband's trust to pay off their debts and save their social standing."

"Can we go to the police?" I asked.

"With the note? It's a start, but a clever defense lawyer could argue it was a misunderstanding or a forged document. We need concrete proof of their intent. And there’s another problem. Daniel has filed an emergency petition for custody of Lily."

"What?!" I gasped. "He’s not her father! He has no legal right to her!"

"He’s claiming that you are mentally unstable, that you abducted the child from a stable environment, and that as her prospective stepfather, he is acting in her best interest. He’s trying to force you out of hiding so he can serve you with court papers. If you don't show up to court, the judge might issue a temporary protective order, giving them leverage."

"I won't let them take her," I vowed, my voice shaking with anger.

"You won't have to," Marcus said. "But we have to play this smart. We need to lure them into exposing themselves."
