Chapter 10 - A New Dawn for Us

Six months later, the air was crisp and filled with the scent of pine and blooming jasmine.
We had moved to a beautiful, quiet coastal town, far away from the city and the painful memories of the past. With Marcus's help, David’s trust fund remained fully protected, safely tucked away for Lily's future. I had used a small portion of my own savings to buy a charming, sunlit cottage with a wrap-around porch and a big backyard.
And, true to my promise, it had a beautiful, sparkling swimming pool.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the backyard was filled with laughter. A few of Lily's new school friends were running around the lawn, playing tag, their bright voices echoing in the gentle breeze.
I sat on the porch steps, watching them, a cup of warm tea cradled in my hands. The heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders for so long had finally lifted. We were safe. We were free.
"Mommy! Mommy, look!"
Lily ran up the steps, her cheeks flushed with excitement, her eyes shining with pure joy. She was wearing a simple, bright yellow sundress.
"What is it, sweetheart?" I asked, smiling.
She spun around, showing me her hair. "Emma’s mommy braided my hair! Just like a princess! See?"
I looked at the neat, beautiful French braid crown wrapping around her head. My eyes stung with happy tears as I remembered that terrible morning at the wedding, when her braid had been undone in that dark, locked room.
I pulled her into a tight, warm hug, breathing in the sweet scent of her shampoo.
"You look absolutely beautiful, my little princess," I whispered, kissing her cheek. "The most beautiful princess in the world."
"Are we going to stay here forever, Mommy?" she asked, looking into my eyes.
May you like
"Yes, baby," I said, my voice steady and filled with absolute certainty. "We are staying right here. Just you and me. Safe, happy, and together."
Lily smiled, a bright, beautiful smile that lit up her entire face, before running back to join her friends in the garden. I watched her run, her braid bouncing in the sunlight, knowing that the promise I made to her father had been kept. No one would ever come between us again.
