Chapter 6 - The Hunted and the Hunter

The next day, I received a text message from an unknown number.

Rachel. I know you’re scared, but running makes you look guilty. Let’s talk. Just you and me. No lawyers, no mothers. Let’s resolve this. If you don't meet me, the police will find you, and it will be much worse for Lily.

It was Daniel.

I stared at the screen, my heart pounding. He was trying to intimidate me, but he was also desperate. Marcus’s words echoed in my mind: We need to lure them into exposing themselves.

I called Marcus immediately and read him the text.

"It's a trap, but it's also our best opportunity," Marcus said. "If you meet him, it has to be in a public place. You need to carry a recording device. If we can get him to admit to the financial motive, or to locking Lily up, the custody petition and their entire scheme will fall apart."

"I'll do it," I said without hesitation.

"Are you sure, Rachel? It will be dangerous. He is desperate."

"He threatened my daughter, Marcus. I would walk through fire to protect her. Tell me what I need to do."

We spent the next few hours formulating a plan. I would agree to meet Daniel at a busy, upscale restaurant downtown—a place where he wouldn't dare cause a public scene. Marcus would be seated nearby, disguised, with a private investigator who would record the entire conversation and document the meeting.

I looked at Lily, who was happily watching a cartoon on the motel television. She looked so innocent, so completely unaware of the dark forces swirling around her. I walked over and kissed the top of her head.

"Mommy has to go take care of some grown-up business tonight, sweetie," I said. "Our friend Marcus is going to have his assistant, Sarah, watch you here. She's very nice, and she’s bringing ice cream."

"Will you be back soon?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.

"I will be back before you know it. And when I get back, this will all be over."
