Chapter 7 - THE UNMASKING IN THE BALLROOM

Upstairs in the grand ballroom, five hundred guests clapped politely as Julian Blackwood raised his glass, smiling his charming, charismatic smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners," Julian’s voice boomed through the state-of-the-art acoustic sound system, rich and authoritative. "Tonight marks a historic milestone for the city of Chicago. The complete unification of our interests with the Moretti family. A partnership forged in mutual trust, strength, and unwavering loyalty."

Don Moretti nodded stiffly, raising his own glass in acknowledgment, though a subtle tension lingered in his posture.

"Some have questioned our methods," Julian continued, pacing gracefully across the stage. "Some have even claimed that internal friction threatens our foundation. But let me assure you—the Blackwood name stands stronger than ever. Untouchable. Absolute."

Just as Julian raised his glass to take a sip, the massive, thirty-foot LED screen behind him flickered violently.

The golden corporate logo vanished.

Instead, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson, accompanied by the bold, unyielding headline: AUDIT TRAIL: THE TRUE COST OF THE BLACKWOOD EMPIRE.

Whispers instantly rippled through the crowd. Glasses lowered. Heads snapped toward the stage.

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes widening in sudden disbelief as lines of encrypted offshore bank transfers began scrolling across the giant display—detailing millions of dollars funneled from front companies straight into the private accounts of corrupt judges, police chiefs, and politicians sitting right in the room.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Don Moretti roared, slamming his glass down onto the podium, the crystal shattering into a dozen pieces. "Julian, what are these numbers?!"

"It’s a cyberattack!" Julian shouted into the microphone, his polished composure cracking as sweat beaded on his forehead. "Security! Cut the feed! Cut the feed immediately!"

A technician in the control booth frantically tried to hit the master kill switch, but the screen only shifted again.

This time, high-definition hospital security footage filled the massive display.

The room went dead silent.

On the screen, Dr. Harrison Whitmore could be clearly seen accepting a heavy leather briefcase stuffed with hundred-dollar bills from a man wearing a dark sleeve and a distinct silver eagle cuff link.

Then the audio played—crystal clear, booming across the entire ballroom acoustics:

“Just make sure the heart monitor flatlines by midnight, Whitmore,” Julian’s recorded voice echoed through the hall. “A dead baby doesn't ask questions about who owns the syndicate.”

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Several high-ranking city officials immediately bolted for the exits, while others stared at Julian in absolute horror and disgust.

Don Moretti turned slowly toward Julian, his face dark with murderous rage. "You... you tried to murder my grandson. You killed my flesh and blood under the guise of an alliance."

"Don Moretti, wait—it's a forgery! Deepfake technology!" Julian stammered, backing away from the podium as the armed syndicate guards in the room lowered their weapons, suddenly unsure of who to protect.

The heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung open with a slow, deliberate bang.

All eyes turned toward the entrance.

Ethan Blackwood walked down the center aisle, his shoulders square, his gaze locked entirely on his brother. Behind him walked Viktor Vance, holding a secure tactical briefcase, and beside Ethan walked Claire, holding baby Noah safely against her chest.
