Chapter 5 - THE GHOST OF THE WAREHOUSE

The grain silo was a front. Beneath the rusted corrugated steel lay a massive, subterranean logistics hub that had once served as a bootlegging depot during Prohibition. Now, it was Ethan’s secondary armory and safehouse.
As the heavy steel blast doors hissed open, rows of fluorescent lights flickered to life, revealing an impressive array of tactical gear, encrypted communication arrays, and three armored transport vehicles.
Ethan carried Noah gently into the makeshift medical bay while Claire finally changed into a dry set of tactical fatigues Ethan had scavenged from the locker room. The warmth of the room began to thaw her frozen limbs, but the adrenaline still hummed in her veins like live current.
"Drink this," Ethan said, handing her a steaming cup of black coffee as she stepped out of the changing alcove.
"Thanks," she murmured, taking a cautious sip. She looked around the cavernous bunker. "You mentioned an executioner. Who could possibly turn against Julian? He controls everyone."
"Not everyone," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shadows near the far end of the armory.
Claire instinctively reached for her holster, but Ethan placed a calming hand on her shoulder.
A massive man stepped into the light. He stood well over six feet tall, with a grid of jagged burn scars covering the entire left side of his face and neck. He wore a heavy leather duster, and hanging from his belt was a custom-molded tactical holster holding a suppressed .45 caliber pistol.
"This is Viktor Vance," Ethan introduced quietly. "Former head of security for the Blackwood syndicate. Julian’s most trusted enforcer for fifteen years."
Viktor’s cold, mismatched eyes locked onto Claire, then shifted down to the bundle in the crib where Noah was sleeping peacefully. A strange, sorrowful expression flickered across the scarred mercenary's face.
"You smell like hospital disinfectant and river water," Viktor said, his voice like grinding stones. "You must be the nurse who ruined Julian’s masterpiece."
"I kept a baby from being murdered," Claire retorted, standing her ground despite the man's intimidating aura. "If that makes me a criminal, then so be it."
Viktor let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Spunk. Lucas had that same look in his eye the day he told Julian he was marrying Isabella." Viktor turned his gaze to Ethan. "You brought them here. That means Julian’s hounds are already picking up the scent. If they trace the bypass, we have less than an hour before this bunker is surrounded."
"I didn't bring them here to hide, Viktor," Ethan said, stepping forward. "I brought them here to settle accounts. You saw what Julian did to Lucas. And now he tried to kill his own blood—a helpless newborn."
Viktor walked over to a stainless-steel workbench, picking up a heavy tactical tablet. He swiped across the screen, bringing up a live blueprint of a sprawling downtown skyscraper.
"The annual Blackwood Syndicate Gala is tonight at the Obsidian Tower," Viktor said softly. "All the capos, all the corrupt judges, and every single board member who voted to back Julian’s expansion will be in attendance. Julian plans to announce the complete absorption of the Moretti assets over champagne."
"He’s celebrating a murder he thinks he successfully covered up," Ethan said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"Precisely," Viktor nodded. "If we walk in through the front door, we become targets. But if we use the historical service access beneath the foundation—the same one we used back in the old days—we can bypass the entire security detail."
Claire looked between the two hardened men. "You're going to crash the gala."
"Not just crash it," Ethan corrected, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "We’re going to broadcast every single financial ledger, every offshore bank transfer, and the hospital surveillance footage of Dr. Whitmore receiving his payoff directly onto the main ballroom screens."
Viktor pulled a heavy duffel bag of custom tactical gear onto the table, opening the zipper to reveal an assortment of hardware, encrypted flash drives, and communication rigs.

"And what about Noah?" Claire asked, her protective instincts flaring up instantly. "I am not leaving him here alone."
"Noah comes with us," Ethan said firmly, meeting her gaze. "The safest place tonight is right in the eye of the storm. Julian will never expect us to bring the baby straight into the lion's den."
