Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWS

Claire stared at the idling vehicle in disbelief. "How did you... Julian had you covered!"

"Julian has an ego," Ethan’s voice rang out from the driver’s seat, his face illuminated by the amber glow of the dashboard instruments. A fresh crimson stain soaked through the sleeve of his dark wool coat where a graze had caught him during the firefight, but he moved with chilling efficiency. "He wanted to gloat. He wanted to watch me break. He forgot that I built this estate brick by brick—including the escape routes he was too arrogant to memorize."

Claire didn't wait for a second invitation. She hauled herself and Noah into the backseat of the armored SUV, slamming the heavy door shut. The vehicle surged forward instantly, tires biting into the slush as Ethan accelerated hard onto the deserted highway, merging into the labyrinth of Chicago's industrial district.

The heater blasted hot air, but Claire couldn't stop shivering. Her clothes were soaked through, heavy and freezing against her skin.

"The baby," Claire stammered, her teeth clicking together. "Check him. The water... he might have inhaled some spray."

Ethan glanced in the rearview mirror, his sharp eyes softening for a fleeting second. He reached into the glove compartment, tossing a dry, thermal tactical blanket backward. "Wrap him first. Then yourself. He’s a fighter, Claire. Just like his mother."

Claire quickly stripped away her frozen jacket, wrapped Noah securely in the thermal layer, and tucked him against her chest where her body heat could radiate into him. The baby stirred, letting out a soft yawn before settling back into a deep, exhausted sleep.

Only then did Claire look up at Ethan through the mirror. "Who is the mother, Ethan? You mentioned her the night we arrived, but Julian spoke of an 'alliance with the Italian syndicate.' What aren't you telling me?"

Ethan kept his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked asphalt ahead, his jaw tight. "Noah’s mother was Isabella Moretti. The daughter of Don Moretti, the head of the South Side outfit. Two years ago, my older brother Lucas—Julian's golden boy—fell in love with her. It was supposed to be a peace treaty. A marriage to unite the two largest syndicates in the Midwest."

"What happened to Lucas?" Claire asked softly.

"Six months ago, his car went off the Lake Shore Drive overpass," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with suppressed grief. "The police ruled it an accident. Brakes failed. But Lucas was meticulous about his vehicles. He checked everything twice."

"Julian," Claire realized, the pieces snapping together with terrifying clarity.

"Julian didn't want a merger," Ethan confirmed, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. "He wanted absolute monopoly. He knew an alliance with the Morettis would dilute his power. So he eliminated Lucas. And when Isabella gave birth to Noah—bearing the bloodline of both families—Julian knew the child would eventually grow up to claim his father's rightful stake on the board. So he tried to eliminate him in the hospital."

"And the silver eagle cuff link?" Claire asked.

"Julian wears them every day. But he intentionally left one behind in the nursery to frame me," Ethan said bitterly. "He wanted my own loyalists to think I had gone rogue and betrayed the family, giving him the legal mandate to execute me and seize total control."

"So what do we do?" Claire asked, looking down at the sleeping infant. "We can't go to the police. Julian owns half the department. We can't hide forever."

Ethan steered the SUV off the highway, turning down a nondescript gravel road that led toward an abandoned grain silo on the edge of Lake Michigan. The structure loomed like a dark monolith against the stormy sky.

"We don't hide," Ethan said, shifting the transmission into park. "We go to war. But to beat Julian, we need his own executioner on our side."
