Chapter 6 - THE OBSIDIAN TOWER

The Obsidian Tower pierced the Chicago skyline like a shard of black obsidian, its glass facade gleaming under the glare of thousands of city lights. limousines lined the VIP valet lane in a continuous, glittering procession as the city's elite—politicians, judges, high-ranking corporate executives, and underworld bosses—arrived for the most exclusive gala of the year.

Deep beneath the sub-basement levels, far from the champagne and string quartets, a heavy maintenance hatch clicked open.

Claire stepped out onto the damp concrete floor of the service corridor, keeping a firm grip on the tactical baby carrier strapped securely against her chest. Noah was fast asleep, swaddled in noise-canceling infant earmuffs Ethan had modified to protect his sensitive ears from the inevitable commotion ahead.

Viktor led the way, moving with supernatural stealth despite his bulky frame. He slipped a keycard—stolen from a corrupt precinct captain two days prior—into the wall scanner of the private freight elevator.

The digital panel flashed green. The heavy steel doors slid open silently.

"Thirty floors straight up," Viktor muttered as they stepped inside. "We exit directly into the executive communications suite behind the main ballroom. From there, Ethan takes the master override terminal."

"And the guards?" Claire asked, adjusting the strap of her tactical vest.

"Sleeping," Viktor replied grimly, tapping the suppressor on his hip. "Or tied up in the ventilation shafts. Nobody expected an infiltration from the utility level."

The elevator hummed smoothly, ascending at breakneck speed. Claire looked at Ethan, who stood silently in the corner of the cab, his face cast in shadow. The tension radiating off him was palpable—a coiled spring ready to snap.

"You okay?" Claire asked quietly, breaking the silence.

Ethan looked up, meeting her eyes. "My brother stole my family, Claire. He murdered my brother, and he tried to kill an innocent child just to keep his throne. Tonight, the Blackwood name is either going to burn to the ground, or it’s going to be redeemed."

Ding.

The elevator stopped. The digital display blinked: FLOOR 50 - EXECUTIVE SUITE.

The doors parted with a soft hiss.

Before them lay the plush, red-carpeted hallways leading directly into the backstage control booth of the grand ballroom. Muffled music and the murmur of hundreds of conversations filtered through the heavy double doors.

Viktor raised a fist, signaling a halt. He pressed his ear against the door, listened for three seconds, and then kicked it open with controlled force.

Two private security guards inside the control booth didn't even have time to reach for their sidearms. Viktor and Ethan moved in unison, sweeping the room in a fluid, bloodless takedown, securing both guards with heavy zip-ties and gagging them before they could sound an alarm.

"We're in," Ethan whispered, dropping his tactical bag onto the main console. He slammed a high-capacity encrypted flash drive into the master broadcasting port.

Lines of green code scrolled frantically across the massive multi-monitor display wall.

"Downloading the financial ledgers," Ethan announced, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Hospital surveillance footage syncing now. Audio logs of Whitmore taking Julian's bribe... uploading to the main projector network in three... two..."

"Wait," Claire interrupted, pointing at the security monitor showing the main ballroom floor.

On the massive stage bathed in crimson and gold spotlights stood Julian Blackwood, holding a crystal glass of champagne. Next to him stood Don Moretti, looking grim and imposing in a tailored velvet tuxedo.

"He's about to make the official announcement," Claire said.

Ethan hit the enter key with ferocious finality. "Let him talk."
