Chapter 8 - The Trial of Greed
The trial itself was swift. Julian, desperate to avoid a life sentence for attempted murder after poisoning, accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to all charges and agreed to testify fully against Vanessa in exchange for a twenty-five-year sentence with no possibility of early parole.
Vanessa’s defense tried to paint her as a victim of Julian’s manipulation, but the mountain of evidence against her was insurmountable. The prosecution presented the chain that had bound Lily’s leg, the zip ties that had cut into Daniel’s flesh, and the digital logs of Vanessa’s attempts to liquidate the trust fund.
The most powerful moment of the trial came when the judge allowed a videotaped deposition from Lily to be played in court.
In the video, Lily sat in her therapist's office, holding a stuffed bear. Her voice was small but clear.
"The bad lady locked my daddy in the dark," Lily said to the camera. "She told me if I made a sound, she would make him sleep forever. But my grandma told me that love is stronger than the dark. And my grandma was right."
There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom. Even the stoic members of the jury looked visibly moved.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a verdict of guilty on all counts. The judge sentenced Vanessa to life in prison without the possibility of parole, calling her actions "the pinnacle of calculated cruelty and greed."
As the gavel banged down, ending the trial once and for all, Daniel and I held hands. The weight that had settled on our chests on that quiet Sunday afternoon finally evaporated.
