Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

While the police mobilized to apprehend Julian, I returned to my house to protect Lily. The night grew darker, and a heavy rain began to fall, drumming against the roof like a relentless warning.
Lily was awake, sitting at the kitchen table drawing with a set of crayons I’d kept from Daniel's childhood. She was drawing a picture of a large, bright yellow sun, but her colors were jagged and aggressive.
"Grandma," she said, without looking up. "Why did Vanessa hate us?"
The question broke my heart. How do you explain the concept of absolute greed and betrayal to a seven-year-old child?
"She didn't hate you, darling," I said gently, sitting beside her and wrapping an arm around her small shoulders. "Vanessa is a very sick, selfish person. She didn't understand how precious you and your daddy are. Some people are like storms—they bring noise and fear, but they always pass. And we are the strong house that stands after the storm is gone."
Lily looked at me, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I was so scared in the room. I thought the chain would never come off."
"But you were so brave," I reminded her. "You saved your daddy. You are the hero of this family, Lily."
She offered a small, tentative smile and leaned her head against my chest. As I held her, my phone rang again. I picked it up eagerly, hoping for good news.
"Margaret?" It was Daniel. His voice was breathless, filled with a mixture of shock and relief.
"Daniel! What happened? Did they get Julian?"
"Yes," Daniel said. "The police raided the motel. Julian tried to run out the back window, but they had the perimeter secured. They caught him. But Margaret... it’s worse than we thought."
"What do you mean?"
"When they arrested him, he was frantic. He told them Vanessa had poisoned him. He’d had a drink with her before she took off, and he started showing symptoms of severe organ toxicity about an hour ago. The paramedics are rushing him to the ICU right now. He’s talking to the police because he knows he’s dying, and he wants revenge on her."

I gasped. "She tried to kill her own partner in crime?"
"She didn't just try," Daniel said grimly. "Julian is in critical condition. But before he lost consciousness, he gave the police Vanessa’s exact flight plan. She’s not driving to Canada. That was a decoy. She's heading to a private airfield in Vermont. She has a charter plane waiting to take her to a non-extradition country in South America. And she’s leaving tonight."
