Chapter 6 - A Web of Lies Unraveling

With Julian in custody and fighting for his life under police guard, the entire state police network focused on the private airfield in Vermont. Detective Carter kept us updated by phone every hour.

The storm outside raged on, mirroring the chaotic search taking place across the state lines. Daniel returned to my house, unable to sit idle in an empty police precinct. He sat at the kitchen table, holding Lily’s hand as she slept with her head on his lap.

"She nearly destroyed us, Mom," Daniel whispered, looking out the dark window. "I built a life for us after Sarah died. I thought I was doing the right thing by trying to find a mother for Lily. I feel like such a fool."

"Daniel," I said, pouring him a fresh cup of coffee. "Vanessa was a professional. The police found out she had three different aliases in three different states. She targets wealthy widowers. You weren't her first victim, but because of you and Lily, you will be her last."

"I just want it to be over," he sighed, kissing the top of Lily's head.

Just then, my cell phone buzzed. It was a text from Detective Carter: We have localized her position. We are moving in on the airfield now. Stand by.

The minutes dragged like hours. I watched the clock on the wall tick away. 11:42 PM. 11:58 PM. 12:15 AM.

Every second felt like an eternity. If Vanessa made it onto that plane, the chances of ever recovering the stolen funds—or seeing justice served—would dwindle to near zero. She would vanish into the tropical jungles or bustling metropolises of South America under a new name, leaving behind a trail of ruined lives.

At 12:32 AM, the phone finally rang.

"Carter here," the detective’s voice crackled through the receiver over the sound of heavy rain and howling wind. "We’ve got her."

A collective breath escaped my lungs. "Is she in custody?"

"Yes," Carter said, sounding utterly exhausted but triumphant. "We blocked the runway just as her charter plane was taxiing out. She tried to make a run for it into the woods near the tarmac, but our canine units tracked her down. We recovered the fraudulent documents, her fake passports, and the cash she had managed to withdraw. She’s being transported to the county jail as we speak."

"And Julian?" Daniel asked, leaning close to the phone.

"He survived the night," Carter replied. "The doctors managed to pump his stomach in time. He’s stable, and his confession has been fully recorded and videotaped. Both of them are going away for a very, very long time."

Daniel closed his eyes, his shoulders finally dropping as the immense tension of the last forty-eight hours washed away. He looked up at me, his eyes wet with tears of relief.

"We did it," he whispered. "We're safe."
