Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Accomplice

The transition from the hospital back to my suburban bungalow was quiet. Daniel and Lily couldn't return to their own home; it was currently sealed off as an active crime scene, crawling with forensic technicians dusting for fingerprints and cataloging evidence.
I settled Lily into my guest bedroom, surrounding her with her favorite plush toys and a warm mug of chamomile tea. She clung to me for a long time, her small body shaking whenever the wind rattled the windowpanes.
"Grandma," she whispered, her eyes wide and haunted. "Is the bad lady gone?"
"She is far away from here, sweetheart," I assured her, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. "The police are looking for her, and your daddy and I are right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."
Once Lily finally drifted into a restless sleep, I walked down to the living room. Daniel was sitting on the sofa, staring blankly at the fireplace. He looked incredibly fragile, his shoulders slumped under the weight of the world.
"I need to know how it happened, Daniel," I said softly, sitting beside him and placing a hand on his knee. "How did they catch you off guard?"
Daniel let out a long, ragged sigh. "It started on Thursday night. Vanessa had been acting distant for weeks, constantly demanding that I sign a document allowing her co-trustee status over Lily's fund. She claimed she wanted to invest it in a high-yield real estate portfolio Julian had recommended. When I flatly refused and told her I was going to contact a different financial auditor to review our accounts, her attitude completely changed."
He paused, swallowing hard before continuing.
"On Friday evening, Julian came over under the pretense of watching a football game. He brought a bottle of wine. I didn't suspect a thing. But after my first glass, my head started spinning. I felt paralyzed. That’s when Julian’s face changed. The warmth vanished. He and Vanessa stood over me, demanding my digital signatures and passwords."
"And when you wouldn't give them?" I asked, my blood running cold.
"Julian dragged me down to the basement," Daniel said, his voice trembling. "They tied me up. Vanessa told me that if I didn't cooperate, they would take Lily away where I’d never find her. They locked Lily in her room, using the chain to ensure she couldn't escape or find a way to help me. They thought they had all weekend to break me. Julian was supposed to transfer the funds on Monday morning when the banks opened."
"But they didn't count on Lily's bravery," I murmured, a surge of pride tempering my anger.
"No," Daniel smiled faintly, though his eyes remained filled with pain. "Lily had an old tablet I’d decommissioned months ago. She kept it hidden in her mattress. She managed to connect to our neighbor's guest Wi-Fi and message her classmate. If it weren't for her... Mom, I don't think they would have let us live once they got the money."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. This wasn't just a robbery; it was an attempted double homicide wrapped in domestic deception. Vanessa and Julian had been prepared to eliminate my son and granddaughter to secure their wealth.
Our conversation was interrupted by the sharp ringing of my home telephone. I stood up and answered it.
"Mrs. Wilson?" It was Detective Carter's voice, tense and urgent.
"Yes, Detective. Have you found them?"

"We've made a breakthrough, but we need Daniel's help. We found Julian's personal laptop in a dumpster behind his office. It’s encrypted, but there’s a physical security key we believe is hidden somewhere in Daniel’s house—possibly in his workshop. We need to go back there. Can Daniel accompany us?"
Daniel stood up immediately, having overheard the conversation. "I'm coming," he said resolutely. "I want these monsters behind bars."
