Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

A year had passed since that fateful Sunday.
Today was Lily's eighth birthday. The backyard of Daniel’s new cottage was decorated with colorful balloons, streaming ribbons, and a giant banner that read: Happy 8th Birthday, Lily!
The yard was filled with laughter. Lily’s school friends were running around playing tag, their cheerful screams echoing through the warm summer air. Detective Carter, who had become a close family friend throughout the ordeal, stood by the grill with Daniel, flipping burgers and sharing a laugh.
I sat on the porch swing, sipping a glass of iced tea, watching my family.
Daniel looked healthier than he ever had. The paleness was gone, replaced by a warm, sun-kissed glow. He laughed easily now, his eyes bright with happiness as he watched his daughter run across the lawn.
Lily ran up the porch steps, her face flushed with excitement and a streak of chocolate frosting on her cheek. She jumped into my lap, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck.
"Grandma! Did you see my cake? It has a big castle on it!"
"I saw it, my beautiful princess," I smiled, hugging her close and inhaling the sweet scent of her hair. "It’s the most beautiful cake for the most beautiful girl."
"I’m so happy, Grandma," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. "I love our family."
"I love our family too, sweetheart," I replied, my eyes misting with happy tears.
Daniel walked up the steps, holding two plates of food. He sat down on the swing next to us, putting his arm around my shoulders and kissing Lily’s cheek.
"We made it, Mom," he said softly, looking out at the sun setting over the trees, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold.

"Yes, we did, Daniel," I said, leaning into his touch.
The nightmare was over, the storm had passed, and we had stepped together into a beautiful, bright new dawn.
