Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Alliance
We crept back upstairs, taking care not to make a sound. Mark pushed open Lily’s bedroom door, and this time, I stepped inside with a heart full of wonder rather than dread.
The room had been completely rearranged. The large oak bookshelf, which had stood in the corner for years, was hinged on a heavy-duty steel frame, swinging outward like a secret door. Behind it, a newly cut opening in the wall led into what used to be an unused, dusty crawl space under the roof eaves.
David, the carpenter, looked up from his tool belt and offered a gentle, sympathetic smile. "Good evening, Mrs. Vance. Sorry for the midnight intrusion and the heart attack."
"It's alright, David," I said, offering a watery smile. "Thank you for doing this."
I stepped through the hidden frame into the space beyond. Though it was still under construction, the transformation was already astounding.
The walls had been insulated and covered in smooth drywall. Built-in mahogany shelves lined the sloped ceiling, perfectly sized for my mother's extensive collection of children's books. In the center of the far wall, a small, circular stained-glass window featuring a crescent moon—crafted by hand—was already installed, catching the soft ambient light from the streetlamp outside.
"We still need to install the fairy lights, paint the ceiling navy blue, and put down the plush rug," Mark explained, stepping into the cozy space beside me. "We were going to pull an all-nighter to finish it before sunrise."
I looked around the small, magical sanctuary. I could already picture Lily curled up here with a book, surrounded by the warmth and memory of her grandmother.
"You're not doing it alone," I said, rolling up the sleeves of my cardigan.

Mark blinked in surprise. "Ellie, you've been traveling all day. You must be exhausted."
"I am," I said, smiling brightly as I grabbed a paintbrush from a nearby tray. "But I'm not missing out on building this magic for our daughter. Let's finish her secret library together."
