Chapter 5 - Echoes of the Past

The heavy weight in my chest dissolved into a wave of profound emotion. All the fear, suspicion, and anger that had consumed me since walking through the front door evaporated into thin air. I looked at Mark, his face smeared with dust, his hands calloused from hard labor, all done out of pure, selfless love for our daughter and respect for my late mother's memory.
"Mark... you absolute idiot," I choked out, a laugh breaking through my tears. "I thought you were in trouble! I thought someone was hurting her!"
"I know, I'm sorry," he whispered, reaching out to wipe a tear from my cheek. "When I saw you in the doorway looking so terrified, I realized how suspicious it all looked. But I promise you, Eleanor, everything we're doing is for her."
I stood up from the table and walked back into the kitchen, looking down at Lily. She looked so tranquil sleeping there on the floor, holding her favorite stuffed animal—a faded velvet bunny my mother had sewn for her when she was a baby.
I knelt beside her, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead.
"She misses my mom so much," I whispered to Mark, who had followed me into the room.
"We both know how hard these past three years have been," Mark replied softly, kneeling beside me. "This room... it isn't just a gift. It's a way to bring a piece of her grandmother back to her. A place where she can always feel loved."

I looked back up toward the stairs. "Can I see it?"
Mark smiled, a warm, relieved expression washing over his face. "Come on up. David is just finishing the framing for the hidden door mechanism."
